The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management is part of the University of Hawai’i at Hilo.
It is located on the Big Island of Hawai’i, the largest island in the
Hawaiian Archipelago. Situated in the Pacific Ocean, Hawai’i Island
is about 4000 kilometers (2500 miles) from the mainland U.S.A. Hilo,
which has a major harbour and an international airport, is home to
about 45,000 people and is located about 320 kilometers (200 miles)
from Honolulu, the capital of the State of Hawai’i. The island economy
is centered mainly on agriculture and tourism. The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management opened its doors in the Fall of 1975 with the goal of offering excellence in undergraduate education in the agricultural sciences. The main objective of the college is to prepare students for a broad and full understanding of basic factors involved in production, management, processing, distribution, marketing, sales, and services in the field of agricultural sciences including agribusiness, animal science, aquaculture, agro-ecology & environmental science, crop protection, forestry, pre-veterinary medicine, sustainable agriculture, tissue culture and tropical horticulture. The college stresses hands-on learning techniques in all classes in combination with a rigorous study of the theoretical aspects also. All students are also required to take core basic science courses, as well as substantial courses in general education. The college possesses excellent facilities and emphasize small classes, a low student-faculty ratio, and excellence in teaching. In fall of 1996, the College of Agriculture had 130 students and 11 full-time faculty members. The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management offers the Bachelor of Science degree in seven areas of specializations: Agribusiness, Agroecology/Environmental Science, Animal Science, Aquaculture, Crop Protection, General Agriculture, and Tropical Horticulture. A student must complete 123 semester hours to receive the Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.
