DESCRIPTION
This course provides a historical perspective on the contemporary problems of global communications. It will review the connections between communications and past empires before it examines the rise of a global informatic empire. It will conclude by reviewing the major contemporary problems of international and global communications.

APPROACH
International communications is a vast topic that can be taught in a variety of ways. This course assumes that history matters. It therefore adopts a historical approach to the topic. After reviewing the history of domination and resistance in history through competing technologies and mythologies, the course focuses on some major problems in international and global communications.

REQUIRMENTS
You are required to (1) write two review essays on two books selected from the recommended texts, (2) prepare a case study of a comparative, international, or global communication problem, and (3) actively participate in class discussions.

GRADING
Evaluation is based on the book reviews (20% each), case study (50%), and class participation (10%). Oral and written presentations will be evaluated on the basis of their originality (20%), cogency (20%), organization (20%), style (20%), and scholarship (20%). Your numeric grade corresponds to letter grades as follows: 90-100, A to A+; 80-89, B to B+; 70-79, C to C+; 60-69, D to D+; below 60, F. Attendance is required. Each unexcused absence will result in a reduction of one point in your course grade.
