3. Write & Cite
Now that you have several entries in your library, let’s practice inserting them into a word processing document. To do this you will need to open your word processing program (in this case MS Word). While it would be helpful to have EndNote open as well this isn’t necessary as the program will launch when needed.

Step 3.1.1. Once you have a new blank page opened in MS Word, type the following sentence: This is an example of inserting a single in-text citation.
Step 3.1.2. Select the GO TO ENDNOTE icon in the MS Word toolbar or select TOOLS, ENDNOTE X, GO TO ENDNOTE.

The EndNote program will launch if it wasn’t running at the time you clicked the GO TO ENDNOTE command. The EndNote X “Get Started” window will appear, select the library (MAIN LIBRARY) and click OK.

The MAIN LIBRARY becomes visible.

Step 3.1.3. Select the Rosser & Townsend 2006 reference (highlighted).

Step 3.1.4. To insert the selected Rosser & Townsend citation into the MS Word document use the keyboard shortcut (Alt+2) or select TOOLS, CITE WHILE YOU WRITE, INSERT SELECTED CITATIONS.

Your word processing document will appear on screen to display the Rosser & Townsend in-text citation and bibliography - notice that it's properly formatted in APA 5th edition style!

Step 3.1.5. On a new line type the following sentence: This is an example of inserting multiple in-text citations
Hit the spacebar once which will place your cursor where the citation is to be inserted.
Select the GO TO ENDNOTE icon in the Toolbar or go to TOOLS, ENDNOTE X, GO TO ENDNOTE.

Step 3.1.6. The MAIN LIBRARY will appear on screen.
Select the Heck 2004 and Tinto 2000 citations (highlighted). To select multiple citations click on one citation then hold the CTRL key while clicking on the second citation (or holding the down arrow key).

Step 3.1.7. After selecting the citation(s) use the keyboard shortcut (Alt + 2) or go to TOOLS, CITE WHILE YOU WRITE, INSERT SELECTED CITATIONS.

Step 3.1.8. Your word processing document will appear on screen and display the in-text citations and bibliography which now includes the Heck 2004 and Tinto 2000 entries
Note: The bibliography list will continue to update as you add citations and automatically sort each the new addition.

Step 3.2.1. Type the following sentence and place your cursor where the figure reference is to be inserted: Faculty gender distribution by institutional type shows that males and females are almost equal.

Step 3.2.2. The EndNote Find Figure(s) search window pops up. Type “faculty” as the search term.
The search result shows the Tabata 2005 figure.
To select this figure by clicking INSERT.

The word processing document shows: 1) the figure citation (Figure 1), 2) the figure caption, and 3) the List of Figures title.

Step 3.2.3. To create a List of Figures section in the document, 1) move the List of Figures title, 2) copy and add the Figure 1 caption below the List of Figures title.

You may need to modify individual citations in your paper by excluding the year or author, adding page number(s) when quoting verbatim or for inserting a comment or correction.
Step 3.3.1. Place your cursor within the citation (Rosser & Townsend 2006) to be edited.
Select the EDIT CITATION icon in the Toolbar or go to TOOLS, ENDNOTE X, EDIT CITATION(S).

The EndNote Edit Citation menu will appear showing you available editing options. Options include excluding author and/or year, and adding a prefix, suffix, or pages.
Step 3.3.2. In this instance check the "Exclude year" option and then in the Suffix field enter page numbers:
pp. 130–132
Then select OK.

The Rosser & Townsend edited citation now includes the referenced page numbers while excluding the year.
As your EndNote library grows, it will become increasingly challenging to remember specific references and their relationship to your current research paper. EndNote has a feature to help you locate citations by searching for specific words throughout each reference type in your library. EndNote’s search capacity is facilitated by the reference’s information such as keywords, abstract, research notes, and other fields.
Step 3.4.1. Type the sample sentence as shown and place your cursor where you want to insert a citation.
Then select the EndNote FIND CITATION(S) icon in the toolbar or go to TOOLS, ENDNOTE X, FIND CITATION(S).

Step 3.4.2. In the blank FIND window, type in a search word (“faculty”) then click the SEARCH button.

The window shows the relevant citation and information. Select the citation (highlighted) and click INSERT.

The word processing document will appear and show that the citation was inserted into the word processing document and create a corresponding bibliography entry.
