4. Find Sources (Books, Articles)

Search for Books

4.1. Select Connection File

EndNotes enables you to connect, search, retrieve, and save references from other databases (remote) to add to your library. For this example we are going to connect to the University of Hawai'i Voyager online library system.

Step 4.1.1.   Select EDIT, CONNECTION FILES, OPEN CONNECTION MANAGER.

Step 4.1.2.  The EndNote Connection Files window appears.

Click on UNMARK ALL to deselect any default connection files.

Then scroll down the list until you locate U OF HAWAII and select it by clicking the adjacent box.

Close the EndNote Connection Files window (Ctrl+W).

4.2. Connect to UH Voyager

Step 4.2.1.  Select TOOLS, CONNECT, U OF HAWAII.

EndNote starts to access the University of Hawai'i‘i online database system (Voyager).

4.3. Search Online Library Database (UH Voyager)

Step 4.3.1.  The Connected to Library Catalog of University of Hawai‘i window will appear, quickly followed by the SEARCH “LIBRARY CATALOG OF UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII” search box.

Use the search box to construct a search sequence (faculty tenure) then click the SEARCH button.

Step 4.3.2.  EndNote will display CONFIRM REMOTE SEARCH and show the number of references related to the search term (faculty tenure) that are found in UH Voyager.

You may indicate how many of the references you want to retrieve (especially when dealing with  a large number of references) and view by changing the numbers in the RETRIEVE REFERENCES FROM box and clicking OK.

Step 4.3.3.  The retrieved references will then be displayed on screen.

To preview a reference, click on the SHOW PREVIEW option located on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. To hide the information click HIDE PREVIEW.

The preview screen will show the bibliographic format of the reference.

For a more detailed view of each reference, double-click on a specific entry which will then display all the information.

Noteworthy is the call number and location of the reference.

4.4. Download & Save Search Results

Step 4.4.1.  After viewing the search results, download specific references into your EndNote library.

First select the references you want to download (highlight).

Then click the COPY REFERENCES TO button and select your EndNote MAIN LIBRARY.

Step 4.4.2. The Main Library appears and displays (highlighted) the search result references that were downloaded into the library.

4.5. Modify Connection File

The connection file may require a minor adjustment to remove the second colon which appears in downloaded references between the place of publication and publisher.

4.5.1. Select FIELD EDITING. In the "Field Editing" menu, select the settings:

Field Editing for: Place Published
Change UPPERCASE text to: Lowercase
Enter text to be edited: [Type a colon then hit the ADD key]

Close the window and save the changes.

Search for Articles (via Aggregate Databases)

There will be occasions when you will not be able to connect directly to a remote database (e.g., UH Voyager) due to the lack of having the corresponding EndNotes Connection file. However, you still may be able to search the remote database, save the records, and download the references into your EndNotes library by using a “filter”. EndNotes provides filters that have been configured to import data files from specific databases, and you can also modify and create your own filters to import references from other databases.  The following examples show how to conduct a direct export and indirect import from Academic Search Premier and PsycINFO databases.

4.6. Academic Search Premier (Direct Export Method)

Step 4.6.1. First create a new EndNote library to hold the downloaded references. Go to FILE, NEW, then name the library: DOWNLOADED REFERENCES.

Connect to Academic Search Premier

Step 4.6.2. Launch and point your web browser to the UHM Library main page:

http://library.manoa.hawaii.edu

Select the E-RESOURCES AND DATABASE LINK, followed by BUSINESS/HUMANITIES/ SOCIAL SCIENCE link, then scroll down the list to locate and select ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER. Click on the link and login.

Search and Select References

Direct Export References into EndNote

Step 4.6.5. The “Folder Contents” window appears and shows the 3 selected items.

Click on the EXPORT link which will take you to the “Export Manager” page.

Step 4.6.6. On the “Export Manager” page, select DIRECT EXPORT TO ENDNOTE PROCITE OR REFERENCE MANAGER link.

The downloaded references appear in the library.

Notice that the first letter of each word is capitalized. The title format can be changed within EndNote by editing the APA output style file.

Change Reference Title Capitalization by Modifying APA 5th Style

Step 4.6.8.  To modify the reference title, go to EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT APA.
