2. Enter Info into EndNote

Your EndNote library is a collection of references, each containing the information needed to create an in-text citation and bibliography.  EndNote provides 42 different reference types:  ancient text, artwork, audiovisual material, bill, book, book section, case, chart or table, classical work, computer program, conference paper, conference proceeding, dictionary, edited book, electronic article, electronic book, encyclopedia, equation, figure, film or broadcast, government document, grant, hearing, journal article, legal rule or regulation, magazine article, manuscript, map, newspaper article, online database, online multimedia, patent, personal communication, report, statute, thesis, unpublished work, web page.  Generic and unused templates are available for developing customized reference types to meet your research specifications.

For this tutorial, examples are given for entering a journal article, book, magazine article, and figure (bar chart) reference.

 

2.1. Journal Article Example

 

Step 2.1.1.  We begin by entering references into the MAIN LIBRARY.

Open a new reference form by using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + N) or selecting REFERENCES, NEW REFERENCE.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.1.2.  EndNote default settings usually make the “Journal Article” reference type as the default so it is the automatic selection.

Note: If  the Journal Article reference type is not visible click on the Reference Type pull-down menu (red circle) to locate and select the "Journal Article" reference type.

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.1.3.  Enter the author’s name in the “Author” field.  Names may be entered in two different ways: 1) First Middle Last, 2) Last, First Middle.
 
Type the name of the first author then press ENTER:   Vicki J. Rosser

Now enter the second author’s name:   Barbara K. Townsend

Use the TAB key to advance to the YEAR field.

Note: For complex author names (Jr., II, multiple-words) always enter last name first, followed by titles:
     de Gaulle, Charles
     Smith, Alfred, Jr.
For organizations, include a comma:
U.S. Department of Education,

Note: Providing information in the "Keywords" and "Abstract" fields facilitates searching for references within the EndNote library.

 

Otherwise use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+W) to close the reference.

The MAIN LIBRARY now displays the Rosser and Townsend entry.  The bibliography format of the Rosser and Townsend entry may be viewed in the “Show Preview” window at the bottom of the library window.

If you don’t want to see the complete reference entry, click the up arrow adjacent to the “Hide Preview” option.

 

 

2.2. Book Example

 

Step 2.2.1. Create a new reference by using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + N) or selecting REFERENCES, NEW REFERENCE.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Note that the default reference type is "Journal Article" so you will need to change the reference type to "Book".

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.2.2. Change the reference type to "Book" by clicking on the Reference Type pull-down menu (red circle) and selecting "Book".

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.2.3. Enter the author’s name in the “Author” field.  Names may be entered in two different ways: 1) First Middle Last, 2) Last, First Middle. Multiple author names must be entered one per line.
 
Type the author's name of then press ENTER:
       Ronald H. Heck

Use the TAB key to advance to the YEAR field.

Note: For complex author names (Jr., II, multiple-words) always enter last name first, followed by titles:
     de Gaulle, Charles
     Smith, Alfred, Jr.

For organizations, include a comma after the name: U.S. Department of Education,

 

Step 2.2.4. Continue entering the remaining information, using the TAB key to move to the next fied and the SHIFT+TAB key to return to the previous field. (You can also use your mouse to select the field.)

City: Mahwah, NJ
Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates
Keywords: Policy research, policy process, policy development
Abstract: This book presents theories and research methods for conducting policy research.

Step 2.3.5. Close the reference window by using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + W) or by selecting FILE, CLOSE REFERENCE.

 

 

 

The newly created Heck 2004 book reference is saved to the Main Library and is visible in the display window.

 

 

 

 

 

2.3. Magazine Article Example

 

Step 2.3.1.   Create a new Reference Type by  using the keyboard shortcut command (Ctrl + N) or by selecting REFERENCES, NEW REFERENCE (Ctrl+N).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.3.2.  The default reference type is “Journal Article” and needs to be changed to "Magazine Article" .

To change the reference type to “Magazine Article” click on the Reference Type pull-down menu (red circle) and select MAGAZINE ARTICLE.

 

 

 

 

 

2.3.3.  Enter the author’s name. 

Author names can be entered in one of  two ways:
1) First Middle Last
2) Last, First Middle
Multiple authors must be entered one per line.

Type the name below then press ENTER: Vincent Tinto

Use the TAB key to advance to the YEAR field.

Note: For complex author names (Jr., II, multiple-words) always enter last name first, followed by titles:
             de Gaulle, Charles
             Smith, Alfred, Jr.

Names of organizations should be followed by a comma: U. S. Department of Education,

 

2.3.4.  Continue entering the remaining information, using the TAB key to move to the next field and the SHIFT+TAB key to move to the previous field (if necessary).  You can also use your mouse to select the desired field.

Title: Looking at the university through different lenses
Magazine: About Campus
Volume: 4
Issue:  8
Pages: 2-3
Keywords: Faculty, students, student behavior, student learning.
Abstract: Tinto explains that learning how universities shape student behavior is facilitated by looking at the campus environment which in turn provides clues as to what is valued. What places are centrally located? Who are the occupants? Where are the faculty or student affairs personnel located?

Step 2.3.5. Close the REFERENCE window by using the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + W) or by clicking the “X” in the upper right corner of the reference window (red circle).

 

 

The newly created Tinto 2000 magazine article reference is saved to the Main Library and is visible in the display window.

 

 

 

 

 

 

2.4. Figure (Image)

 

 

Step 2.4.1.   Create a new Reference Type by using the keyboard shortcut command (Ctrl + N) or by selecting REFERENCES, NEW REFERENCE.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.4.2. The New Reference window appears and shows the default reference type “Journal Article” and needs to be changed to "Figure".

To change the reference type to “Magazine Article” click on the Reference Type pull-down menu (red circle) and select FIGURE.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.4.3.   Enter the author’s name and tab to advance to the YEAR field.

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2.4.4.  Continue entering the remaining information, using the TAB key to move to the next field and the SHIFT+TAB key to move to the previous field (if necessary).  You can also use your mouse to select the desired field.

Name of File: Gender by Institution

NOTE: Including information in the Keywords and Abstract fields facilitates searching for references.

 

 

Use the TAB key to advance to the IMAGE field. 

Step 2.4.5. Right-click to activate the sub-menu and select INSERT OBJECT.

Note:  Use INSERT PICTURE to insert graphic files.  Use INSERT 0BJECT to insert file types (non-graphic images) from Microsoft applications such as Excel, Powerpoint, Visio, etc.

 

 

 

 

 

The “Insert Object ” popup window appears. 

Step 2.4.6. Click on the CHOOSE FILE button.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The “Insert Picture” popup window appears. 

Step 2.4.7. Select the image file (Gender by Institution) and click OPEN.

 

 

 

 

 

A thumbnail image is displayed in the IMAGE field.

Step 2.4.8.    TAB to the CAPTION field and enter a description:

Caption: Distribution of faculty by gender and institutional type

Close the REFERENCE window by double-clicking the “X” in the upper right corner of the window or by double-clicking the “X” in the upper right corner of the reference window.

 

 

 

The newly created Tabata 2006 figure reference is saved to the Main Library and is visible in the display window.
