6. Customize Your References

EndNotes provides 42 pre-defined reference formats and 3 unused reference types. If your research material does not fall within the 42 pre-defined types then consider creating a customized reference and corresponding output style to accommodate your research needs.

6.1 Create Reference Type for Web-based Journal Articles

Refer to the APA 5th edition manual to identify what fields (e.g., author, year, article title, etc.) are needed to create the desired reference type. In this example, the following fields are needed:  Author, Article Title, Journal Title, Volume, Issue, URL (web location where the document may be found), and Date Accessed (when the article was accessed and retrieved).

Step 6.1.1. Go to EDIT and click on PREFERENCES.

Step 6.1.2. The ENDNOTE PREFERENCES window will appear.

Tab down to REFERENCE TYPES, click on MODIFY REFERENCE TYPES.

Step 6.1.3.  The Modify Reference Types window appears. Use the pull-down menu to locate the “Unused1” reference type.

Use the EndNotes Generic field names as a guide and type in the corresponding new field name listed under the Web-Based Journal column. The following fields are required: Author, Year, Title, Journal, Volume, and Issue.

Click OK when completed. The EndNote Preferences window appears.

Click OK to close the window and return to the EndNote Main Library display window.

Verify that the  Web-Based Journal  reference was created. (Create a new reference then check the pull-down menu.)

6.2. Create Corresponding Output Style for Web-Based Journal Articles

An Output Style template must be created fro the Web-Based Journal article reference type in order to generate in-text citations and bibliographies.

Step 6.2.1. Go to EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, and EDIT APA 5th.

Step 6.2.2. The APA 5th window will appear.

Scroll down the list in the left column to locate BIBLIOGRAPHY then select TEMPLATES.

Step 6.2.3. Click on the REFERENCE TERM button to locate the Web-Based Journal style.

The Web-Based Journal style box appears.

Step 6.2.4. Click on the INSERT FIELD box which will give you a menu of fields, spacing, and punctuation to create the listing below (note:  you can also copy and paste the punctuation from other formats).

Use the assorted field selections from INSERT FIELDS to create the output format for the Web-based Journal Article.

Close the window when completed.

Step 6.2.5. The “save changes” prompt appears, select YES to save the edit changes to the APA 5th output style.

Test the Web-based Journal Article reference type and output style by entering the following information and generating an in-text citation and bibliography:
