LIS 601 Introduction to Reference & Information Services
Introduces the philosophy, principles and practice of reference/information services in libraries, information centers and online communities. Examines the nature of reference work, human information needs and information literacy. Studies the characteristics and application of bibliographic control, reference effectiveness research, and electronic information retrieval systems. Provides practical experience in evaluation and use of bibliographic and Webliographic materials, reference interview and search technique.

LIS 605 Basic Cataloging & Classification
An introductory course in cataloging and classification. Covers basic application of AACR2, Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal classification systems, and Library of Congress subject headings, as well as use of OCLC.

LIS 610 Introduction to Library & Information Studies
Introduces students to the role of libraries and their social utility in an information society. We consider the historical context and discuss the future of libraries and information centers in a changing technological world. Topics include: characteristics of the information professions, information ethics, intellectual freedom, and intellectual property, access to information, as well as national and international library development.

LIS 615 Collection Development
Principles and issues of collection management and care. Criteria and tools for selecting and deselecting materials. Relationships with publishers/producers.

LIS 650 Management of Libraries & Information Centers
Basic theories and principles of administration for effective management of public, academic, and special libraries and information centers, with emphasis on planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and control. Administrative aspects of public and technical services, facilities, planning, evaluation, public relations, interagency cooperation, and the management of change in bureaucratic organizations.

LIS 652 Introduction to Archives Management
Study of archival principles and management theories applicable to all types of archives. Includes policy, appraisal, computer and micrographic applications, ethical and legal issues.

LIS 663 Basic Database Searching
Introduces use of commercial online databases for interactive retrieval of bibliographic, full-text, and directory information, the development of search strategies using controlled subject vocabulary queries and free text searching.

LIS 670 Introduction to Information Storage & Retrieval
Survey of topics in information science and technology. Lectures and discussions emphasize practice, problems, and theory relating to information storage, retrieval and dissemination provision technology in libraries and information centers.
