Psidium
cattleianum is thought to have been introduced to Hawai`i circa
1825 from
Tropical America. This species takes the form of a shrub
or tree 2-6 m tall and has shiny, dark green
leaves and red fruit containing numerous seeds. P. cattleianum is on the state's
list of most invasive horticultural plants and it has become a serious
pest species in disturbed mesic and wet forest areas, forming dense,
monotypic stands. Strawberry
guava is found on all main islands except Ni`ihau and Kaho`olawe.
