Four species of Metrosideros are found on O`ahu
with a total of five species in the archipelago. These species
range from shrub to tree form and are capable of occupying a number of
vegetation zones from the dry coastal area to mesic and wet
forest. Hawaiians used `ohi`a wood for making canoes,
containers, and sacred images, and `ohi`a flowers and leaves
were incorporated into leis.
