We discussed the "quality of information" on the web. As with any general source of information (e.g., library),
certain of the particular sources are more reliable and respectable than other sources. You will need to learn
how to distinguish between the two. What is a 'legitimate' and 'authoritative' source of information?
In our increasingly complex classification system of websites -- those focusing upon knowledge -- we have:
I. Universities; II. Think Tanks; III. Advocacy Groups; & IV. Other
These classes, while helpful, are not always pure. If fact, one must think hard as to which of these sites,
if any, are truly trustworthy. This is not to say, however, that some sites cannot be trusted more than others.
What about the term 'think-tank'? This is a list of think tanks provided by Policy.com. How do you know
when to put a thing (i.e., a policy oriented group) into the container of "think-tank"? It is absolutely critical
for you to draw an increasingly refined line between 'good' and 'not so good' and 'bad' "think-tanks."
Don't forget to ask yourself what 'knowledge' actually is. I would suggest you look it up. You should
also look up the term 'legitimate.' Once you do this, the following question will make more sense:
Which of these represent true quality in terms of "legitimate" knowledge, and which are more suspicious?
