FIL 461 Filipino Contemporary Literature (3) I
Literature from the early 1900s to the present; selected reading in poetry, short stories, and plays.
Pre: FIL 402 or consent. (alternates with FIL 401)

FIL 462 Filipino Traditional Literature (3) II
Pre-twentieth century folk literature: epics, legends, folktales, myths, and indigenous drama.
Pre: FIL 402 or consent. (alternates with FIL 402)

IP 273E Introduction to Indo-Pacific Languages and Culture (3) II
Introduction to the cultural aspects of Philippine languages and literature which includes
a background on the history, geography, people, values, and foreign influences. (a core course)

IP 363 Philippine Literature in English (3) I
Critical survey of Philippine literature written in English since the early 1900s, focusing
on the cultural values it reflects. (a writing intensive course)

IP 396 Philippine Literature and Folklore in Translation (3) II
Introduction to Philippine folk literature translated in English: epics, myths, legends,
and other folklore types; classic works of vernacular writers included. (a writing intensive course)

IP 431 Rizal's Literary Works in Translation (3)
Interpretation and analyses of Rizal's novels, the Noli and the Fili, as they relate to the social,
political, and historical context of the Spanish regime in the Philippines. Pre: 363 or 396 or ENG 250; or consent.

FIL 112 Intensive Elementary Filipino (10)
Practices idiomatic conversation. Emphasis on communication through integrated
development of listening, speaking, and writing skills. Meets 20 hours a week.

FIL 212 Intensive Intermediate Filipino (10)
Continuation of 112. Communicative competence is aimed at by applying both
the linguistic and social rules of the language. Pre: FIL 112.

FIL 303 Accelerated Third Level Filipino Continuation of 212.
Students read extensively and discuss materials representative of current Filipino that cover a wide range
of subject matter such as: art, history, literature, anthropology, and other disciplines.Pre: FIL 212. 




DIRECTED STUDIES
Special directed studies courses are available for advanced students in Philippine literature, culture, and linguistics.

IP 261V Topics in Indo-Pacific Literature/Culture (Filipino)
Study of a literature or culture of the Indo-Pacific area through readings in various fields in English.
Repeatable up to six credits. Pre: consent.

IP 499V Directed Studies (V) (Filipino)
Study of a Pacific, South Asian, or South East Asian language through vernacular readings in various academic fields.
Repeatable. Pre: third level language or consent.

FIL 699V Directed Reading/Research (V)
Directed research involving the use and analysis of Filipino sources.
Repeatable. Pre: consent.
