• Download the Spring 2009 Design Lab Schedule...
• What are the lab rules?
- Only design students may use the lab.
- NO food or drink in the lab or near computers.
- Only labbies may use the labbie station.
- Please pay at the time of collecting printouts.
- Treat other students and equipment with consideration.
• Color Sync your mac with the DLab & PDF-X/3
- IN Photoshop
>> File >> Browse - IN Bridge
>> Edit >> Creative Suite Color Settings - Choose NORTH AMERICA PREPRESS 2
and click APPLY. - NOTE: This is for mixed RGB and CMYK workflow and will synchronize all creative suite apps with this color space.
(PDF's should be saved as PDF/X-3 and as Acrobat 4 if using transparencies, layer modes, & layers)
COLOR WORKFLOW
When opening an RGB image in Photoshop CS2 with North America Prepress 2 color settings, a warning dialog appears if there is no profile embedded in the image or the embedded profile is not Adobe RGB, the default RGB profile for this workflow. Use the embedded profile in the RGB image. This is the profile used by the provider of the image document before it was sent to you. This profile will be used when the RGB colors are eventually converted to CMYK for printing.
Using the embedded profile allows you to open the image and view the colors accurately without converting the color values from one color space to another. For example, if you open images with the embedded ProPhoto RGB or sRGB profiles, Photoshop CS2 previews those files based on those color spaces. As a result, it is not necessary to convert the image to the RGB working space.

Note: If the embedded profile is a device-dependent camera or scanner profile, you might want to select Convert Document Colors to the Working Space in the Embedded Profile Mismatch dialog box for two reasons. First, equal amounts of R, G, and B always produce a neutral gray in working spaces, so standard working spaces give you more predictable color that is easier to edit. Device-dependent profiles might not have this attribute. Second, this working space profile file size is smaller than device-dependent camera and scanner profiles.

• How do I transfer files from one workstation to another?
1. Copying your files to a storage media ie. flash drive, jump drive, thumb drive, what ever you want to call it. You can also use ipods, external hard drives, etc.
2. Connect to the Server via the globe icon on your dock. Copy your files to the folder named "XFER". Go to another station, connect to the server and copy your files from the xfer folder. NOTE: All files will be deleted from xfer every Friday morning, including stuff marked "do not delete". So do not use the Server for long term storage.
• How do I print?
- Black and white printing can be done from any station in the
lab. 8.5x11 costs 10 cents, 11x17
costs 25 cents. Only labbies should
troubleshoot problems tothe printer. Only media approved by faculty should be used (don't
use transparencies that are not laser printer compatible).
Printouts must be paid for before they are collected. Money goes
in the black and white tincan.
Spare paper for the black and white printer should be available in the cabinet under the radio.
- Color printing for 8.5x11 ($1 in
advance) or 11x17 ($2 in advance)
can be done with the Epson desktop printer. Only labbies or faculty handle the color printers, and only from the labbie station. Students
should prepare a PDF file and supply
it to the labbie (by zip disk, CD, or over the network - see above). Money will be refunded only if the printer
fails to print. Paper is available in the tall cabinet. Money for
color prints should be put in the plastic ziplock marked "Color Log
NoteBook " that should always be in the cabinet.
- Large format printing (24" wide by whatever length) can
be done with the Epson printer. Procedures are the same as with
the Epson desktop printer, make a PDF file
and provide it to the labbie. Pricing for the large format printer
is currently $4 per foot in length (width
is always 24 inches, price may change as we better understand what
ink is going to cost us). It may be possible to combine printouts
with another student to use paper more efficiently.
Paper on this printer comes on a long roll, Faculty or a Labbie is in charge of putting in a new roll or if in case of emergencies a standard grade roll will be left in the cabinet. Labbies please refer to instructions in the Log Book.
• Why do I have to pay for printing?
You pay so we can buy paper and ink. If people don't pay, we'll run out of supplies and you'll have to go to elsewhere. You put it in the (color)log so that it is accountable. NOTE: Lab reimbursements only goes towards new hardwares in the lab, not paper and ink.
• Printer problems
I just tried to print something on the Xerox, but nothing is happening, what should I do?
Is the printer turned on? Do you have Xerox selected as your default printer? Check the printer status in the print center application.
You may be missing the Xerox Printer driver on your machine. Go to Applications > Utilities > Print Center App then Add > from the Print List Window, choose AppleTalk, Local AppleTalk Zone... Design Lab Xerox should appear in the window. Highlight it and click ADD
• My screen resolution is too big or too small, how come?
To change display screen size go to the Apple pull down menu > select System Preferences. Click the "Displays" icon and change the settings.
• Burning a CD?
All computers that have a CD Burner will have Toast Titanium software. Launch Toast under X applications folder on the Dock. Drag files and folders into the area Indicated and Burn.
HINT: If you only have a small amount of data to burn, be sure to UNCHECK "Close Disk" in the Advanced Recorder Settings.. This will only burn data leaving room to burn more on your cd.
• Burning a DVD?
Toast Titanium recommended. Insert blank DVD and Toast or Apple's CD burner should recognize the blank DVD. Drag files and folders into the area Indicated and Burn (Toast). or.(Apple) if DVD appears on Desktop Drag files and folders onto the DVD and Cntrl + Click DVD icon and select Burn
• Where can I put my stuff while I'm working on it?
There is a folder on the desktop named "Documents" that you should be used while you are working on files. Do not use this space for permanent storage. It will be erased periodically. This erasure may happen quite frequently on some of the older macs that have limited disk space.
• So how can I keep a copy of my stuff?
- Burn a CD. The newer macs all have burners. (G5's & some G4's)
- Use FTP to store your stuff on your uhunix server or somewhere else where you have access. Use the ftp client software named Fugu, found in OSX/applications folder on the Dock.
- USB flash drives are another alternative.
- External USB and firewire hard disks are getting smaller in size and price like the Apple Ipod.
• What do I do if an application freezes?
Hit Option+Apple+Escape to get a force-quit window, use that to quit the application that is frozen. Then start it again. If the finder won't respond, reboot using the power switch or the restart button.
• Completely Frozen Mac...
Older Macs: Restart computer by pressing the Restart button. NOTE: Holding Down the mouse while restart is in progress will Eject everything.
New Macs: Since there is no Restart button. Hold down the Power Button until the computer shuts down. Wait 10 seconds then reboot.
• Where did my dock go?
Hit command-option d to toggle the dock setting between visible and invisible. While the dock is invisible, it will appear if you move the cursor over the place where it should appear. To change options on the Dock > go to the System Preferences > Dock
• What should I do if my computer has a problem?
If you are the labbie in charge, try to fix the problem if it is obvious. Otherwise, please make an entry in the problem log which should be on the table behind the labbie station. Write exactly what the problem is, what files were involved, what applications, etc. Ideally we should be able to recreate the problem from the description. Leave copies of the pertinent files in the Documents folder if that seems useful.
Here is a list of problems we encounter in the lab, and the solutions. Some of these can be done by ordinary users, some only by labbies, and some can only be done by the Administrator.
- Mac won't boot, just flashes the system folder icon and ?. Mac cannot see a system folder. Try Zapping the PRAM. To zap the PRAM, you restart while holding down 4 keys: option, apple, p, and r. Let go of the keys after you hear the start-up chime the second time. If that doesn't work just turn off the computer and note the problem in the Log book.
• What are the labbie's responsibilities?
- Enforce lab rules.
- Keep lab equipment secure.
- Collect fees for printing.
- Perform color printing.
- Record problems in the problem log.
- Remain at labbie station at all times.
- Show up on time for your scheduled spot. If you can't make it, try to contact another labbie to cover for you. At the very least you shouuld contact Aaron in time for him to find someone to cover you or in time to put up a sign cancelling the lab time.
- Lend out manuals.
- Light cleaning duties
NOTE: It is not the labbie's responsibility to tutor students in the lab but may help as a courtesy. If a labbie does not live up to her/his responsibilities, he/she will lose labbie privileges.
• Why should I volunteer to be a labbie?
Performing a 3 hour lab shift a week gets you...
- A discount on the lab reimbursement fees.
- Labbies can use the lab anytime it is not reserved for class, and can use it during reserved times if it is not in use or if they get permission from the professor.
- Labbies can use the labbie station, which is one of the fastest macs in the lab.
• How do I volunteer to be a labbie?
Attend a meeting the first week of the semester. The time of the meeting will be announced in class, typically the afternoon of the first Wednesday of the semester. The meeting will include filling out the labbie schedule, labbie duties & training session for those that need it.
• How do labbies check in and out?
If you're the last labbie, be sure to set the alarm and close the door. Yank on the door to make sure the lock is engaged and the door is locked.
• How do I print with the color printer?
Print only PDF files & always check: the Printer Name, Page Setup, Document Size & Quality (Enhanced Matte Paper) Especially for the Desktop Epson 2200.
For the Epson 7600 LARGE FORMAT printer instructions are below however if you are still unsure ask a knowledgeable labbie for assistance.
FIRST, MAKE SURE THE 'CLASSIC ENVIRONMENT' IS NOT RUNNING. Apple > Preferences > Classic OS9 > Stop Classic.
DEMO will appear on prints if Classic OS9 is running.
Open up IMAGE PRINT
{ yellow ball icon on dock }
![]()
Set the size of the document but always leave the WIDTH at 24" and change the HEIGHT to it's appropriate length. To change the page size, Double Click the PAGE pull down menu (24.00"x6.00"). Then a new window shall appear. NOTE: As for the Quality, the 1440 8-Pass or even 4-Pass, I've seen these print out the same Quality as the highest setting, 2880 in half the Time. So choose the 1440 4-pass or 8-pass.
![]()
Width: 24" & Change Height to appropriate length.
NOTE: Be as wise as possible when printing ie. you change the orientation of the PDF file with the Tools available in ImagePrint.
Now with the settings correct, you should just have a large empty canvas. Drag & Drop the PDF file you'll be printing onto the Canvas. Adjust the PDF so it's in the center and Print. Not done yet, read on.
NOTE: You can drag as many PDF files to the Canvas however you cannot delete them once their on. You'd have to Quit and restart ImagePrint and reset the settings.
Now open up SPOOL FACE
{ icon next to ImagePrint icon on dock }In the SpoolFace application you'll see the PDF you just sent to the SpoolFace in the upper left window. Select it > go to Queue pull down menu and select > ENABLE. This will engage the printer to actually start printing.
NOTE: Additional trouble shooting information is located in the Labbie Folder > ~Labbie Help > Printer Help > ...
• How do I change the color printer ink cartridges?
Refer to printer manual on instructions to replace ink cartidges! Manual and spare cartridges are located in the cabinet. Please let Aaron know when supplies are low. Other PDF manuals are located in the Labbie Folder > ~Labbie Help Folder.
To see whether the printer needs ink and which cartridge, open the epson printer utility. Select <apple menu>/.utilities./epson utility. Click on the "ink level" tab to see which cartridge is low.
Troubleshooting: Use the other tabs of the epson printer utility (test, clean, and calibrate) if the printer is not giving satisfactory results but the utility reports that the ink level is okay.
