I'll tell you all my secrets,
but I lie about my past.
--- Tom Waits
I often don't find it easy to answer the questions people ask me about myself. This is not because I'm reluctant, but because it's hard for me to delve down deep inside myself to figure out what the right answer is.
One thing I've had to learn to realize is that people don't necessarily want an answer that's correct, and seldom want one that's complete. They're just trying to get a conversation going. If I start trying too hard to give them a complete answer, then I'm over my time limit and our little verbal dance isn't working. Unfortunately, there's usually not a referee around to let me know this. I just have to depend on the cues I get from watching their face.
