| Salmon and Steelhead are migratory fish and highly prized by fishermen in the Pacific Northwest. Over the years, the salmon and steelhead runs in the Columbia River System have been diminished considerably. Today only hatchery fish, identified by a clipped fin, can be taken from the river. |
My First Salmon! |
|
A nice spring Chinook. |
There are two runs of salmon and two runs of steelhead. Salmon are spring and fall, steelhead are winter and summer. They tend to occupy the same streams. Steelhead can be caught in a variety of methods. My favorite method is casting a red corky and salmon roe with a "pencil lead" dropper. Although, I have had success with a "spin-n-glo" in the current behind my boat. We catch fall Chinook Salmon drifting a "FST Wobbler" behind the boat in August. Bank casting in small coastal streams using salmon roe in late September and October also works well. |
