Native Hawaiian Students in
the Target Communities
The public elementary school enrollments in the target areas include between 27.9 to 92.1 percent Native Hawaiians. At the high school level in the target areas, Native Hawaiians still represent between 19.3 percent (Roosevelt High School) to 71.7 percent (Nānākuli Intermediate/High School) of the high school bodies (Table 4). The break in the educational path from elementary school to higher education is most evident when comparing these enrollment figures to that of first-time freshmen at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (Table 5).
As Table 5 shows, Kamehameha School graduates generally comprise about one-third of all entering first-time Native Hawaiian freshmen at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa. In comparison, only 0-3 percent of the Native Hawaiian students entering the University if Hawai‘i at Mānoa as first-time freshmen each high schools graduated from public high schools serving the Papakōlea and Wai‘anae-Nānākuli communities. Although Native Hawaiians represent comparatively large percentages of the high school enrollments in the Papkolea and Wai‘anae-Nānākuli communities, their educational next page>> |
