ORGANIZING A SREENING EVENT
1. | When approached to do screening | |
a. | ASK "How many people will be screened?" | |
b. | ASK
" How much time will be allowed for screening?" Note: 1 screener should be able to check blood pressures on 2 persons in 5 minutes. Example: 1 screener in I hour should be able to screen 12 to 24 persons, depending if repeat blood pressure is needed. |

c. | ASK "Do you have available certified screeners?" Arrangements can be made for Blood Pressure Certification classes, through the Dept. of Health, Chronic Disease Management and Control Branch. | |
d. | ASK
"Where will the screening be done?" Note: Screening site should be quiet room or area with 1 table (card size table) and 2 chairs per screener. |

e. | Call American
Heart Association (AHA) for cards and screening forms Note: Each screener will need I set of equipment which will include: |

1 mercury
manometer 1 stethoscope 3 blood pressure cuffs (regular, large, adult and child) |
2. | 1-5 days before the screening date: | |
a. | Pick up equipment, screening forms, record cards, and literature. | |
b. | Check supplies and become familiar with forms. |
3. | On screening day: | |
a. | Arrive at screening site 30 minutes early. |

b. | Look over/room area for arrangement of tables and chairs. |
4. | Steps toward easy sceening: | |
a. | CLIENT fills out blood pressure form. | |
b. | CLIENT holds onto form while waiting his/her turn for blood pressure check. | |
c. | SCREENER collects form from client and reviews it to be sure it is filled out completely. | |
d. | SCREENER measures blood pressure and records result on blood pressure form. | |

e. | SCREENER records blood pressure on client record card. | |
f. | SCREENER gives client the record card with brief explanation of the results. | |
g. | SCREENER to advise client about blood pressure recheck using National Guidelines for Referrals (printed on client record card). |
