It is a glorious Koran, on a guarded tablet. [85:21-22]
Lo! We have revealed it, a Koran in Arabic, that ye may understand. [12:2]
This is naught else than a reminder and a lecture making plain, to warn whosoever liveth, and that the word may be fulfilled against the disbelievers. [37:69-70]
This is indeed a noble Koran, in a Book kept hidden, which none touches save the purified, a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. [61:77-80]
We have coined for mankind in this Koran all kinds of similitudes, that haply they may reflect; a Lecture in Arabic, containing no crookedness, that haply they may ward off [evil.] [39:27-28]
And when Our clear signs are recited to them, those who look not to encounter Us say, ‘Bring a Koran other than this, or alter it.’ Say: ‘It is not for me to alter it of my own accord. I follow nothing except what is revealed to me.’ [10:15]
It is a Koran that We have divided, that thou may recite it unto mankind at intervals, and We have revealed it by [successive] revelations. Say: Believe therein or believe not. Lo! those who were given knowledge before it, when it is read unto them, fall down prostrate on their faces, adoring. [17:106-7]
We have inspired in thee a Koran in Arabic, that thou mayest warn the mother-town and those around it, and mayest warn of a day of assembling whereof there is no doubt. A host will be in the Garden, and a host of them in the Flame. [42:7]
When thou recitest the Koran, We place between thee and those who believe not in the Hereafter a hidden barrier; and We place upon their hearts veils lest they should understand it, and in their ears a deafness. [17:45-46]
In truth, We have made the Koran easy to remember, but is there any that remembereth? [54:17]
This Koran could not have been forged apart from God; but it is a confirmation of that which was before it and an exposition of that which is decreed for mankind. Therein is no doubt, from the Lord of the Worlds. [10:37]
Say, He is God, One, God the Eternal. He begetteth not nor is He begotten, and there is none equal unto Him. [112:1-4]
Your God is One God; there is no god but He, the Compassionate, the Merciful. [2:163]
God! There is no God but He, the Ever-living, the Ever-subsisting. Slumber seizeth Him not nor sleep. To Him belongeth whatsoever is in the Heavens and whatsoever is in the Earth. Who is he that shall intercede with Him, unless by His permission? He knoweth what [hath been] before them and what [shall be] after them, and they shall not compass aught of His knowledge save what He willeth. His Throne comprehendeth the Heavens and the Earth, and the care of them burdeneth Him not. He is the High, the Great. [2:255]
Verily, God will not forgive the associating with Him [any other being as a god], but will forgive other sins unto whom He pleaseth; and whoso associateth [another] with God hath wrought a great wickedness. [4:48]
Verily, your Lord is God, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days; then He ascended the throne. He causeth the night to cover the day; it followeth it swiftly; and He created the sun and the moon and the stars, made subject utterly to His command. Do not the whole creation and command belong to Him? Blessed be God, the Lord of the Worlds. [7:54]
Say, O God, to whom belongeth dominion, Thou givest dominion to whom Thou wilt, and from whom Thou wilt Thou takest it away; Thou exaltest whom Thou wilt, and whom Thou wilt Thou humblest. In Thy hand is good. Verily Thou art all-powerful. Thou causest the night to pass into the day, and Thou causest the day to pass into night; and Thou bringest forth the living from the dead, and Thou bringest forth the dead from the living; and Thou givest sustenance to whom Thou wilt without measure. [3:26-27]
With Him are the keys of the hidden things; none knoweth them but He: and he knoweth whatsoever is on the land and in the sea, and there falleth not a leaf but he knoweth it, nor a grain in the dark parts of the earth, nor a moist thing nor a dry thing but [it is noted] in a distinct writing. And it is he who taketh your souls at night, and knoweth what ye have gained in the day; then He reviveth you therein, that an appointed time may be fulfilled. Then unto Him shall ye return; then will he declare unto you what ye have done. [6:59-60]
Verily God causeth the grain to come forth, and the date-stone; He bringeth forth the living from the dead, and He bringeth forth the dead from the living: This is God; then wherefore are ye turned away? He causeth the dawn to appear, and hath ordained the night for rest, and the sun and the moon for reckoning time: this is the appointment of the Mighty, the Wise. And it is He who hath ordained for you the stars, that ye may be guided by them in the darkness of the land and of the sea: We have clearly shown the signs of Our power unto the people who know. And it is He who hath produced you from one soul, and there is a place of rest and of storing: We have clearly shown the signs to the people who understand. And it is He who hath sent down water from Heaven, and We have produced thereby the germs of everything, and We have caused the green thing to come forth therefrom, from which We draw forth grains massed; and from the palm-tree, from its fruit-branch, clusters of dates heaped together; and gardens of grapes, and the olive and the pomegranate, like one another and not like. Look ye at their fruits when they bear fruit, and their ripening. Verily therein are signs unto the people who believe. [6:95-99]
Verily We created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in six days, and naught of weariness touched Us. [50:38]
And when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am about to place a viceroy in the earth, they said: Wilt Thou place therein one who will do harm therein and will shed blood, while we, we hymn Thy praise and sanctify thee? He said: Surely I know that which ye know not. And he taught Adam all the names, then showed them to the angels, saying: Inform me of the names of these if ye are truthful. They said: Be glorified! We have no knowledge saving that which Thou has taught us. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Knower, the Wise. He said, O Adam! Inform them of their names, and when he had informed them of their names, He said: Did I not tell you that I know the secret of the heavens and the earth? And I know that which ye disclose and which ye hide. And when We said unto the angels: Prostrate yourselves before Adam, they fell prostrate, all save Iblis [Satan.] He demurred through pride, and so became a disbeliever. [2:30-34]
We have given you [mankind] power in the earth, and appointed for you therein a livelihood. Little give ye thanks! And We created you, then fashioned you, then told the angels: Fall ye prostrate before Adam! And they fell prostrate, all save Iblis, who was not of those who make prostration. [7:10-11]
Say [unto them O Muhammad]: God giveth life to you, then causeth you to die, then gathereth you unto the Day of Resurrection whereof there is no doubt. But most of mankind know not. And unto God belongeth the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and on the day when the Hour riseth, on that day those who follow falsehood will be lost. [45:26-27]
Every soul will taste of death. And ye will be paid on the Day of Resurrection only that which ye have fairly earned. Whoso is removed from the Fire and is made to enter Paradise, he indeed is triumphant. The life of this world is but comfort of illusion. [3:185]
When the Trumpet shall sound one blast and the earth with the mountains shall be lifted up and crushed with one crash, then, on that day will the Event befall. And the heaven will split asunder, for that day it will be frail; and the angels will be on the sides thereof, and eight will uphold the Throne of their Lord that day, above them. On that day ye will be exposed; not a secret of you will be hidden. Then as for him who is given his record in his right hand, he will say: Take, read my book! Surely I knew that I should have to meet my reckoning. Then he will be in blissful state in a high Garden whereof the clusters are in easy reach. [It will be said:] Eat and drink at ease for that which ye sent on before you in past days. But as for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say: Oh, would that I had not been given my book and knew not what my reckoning! Oh, would that it had been death! My wealth hath not availed me, my power hath gone from me. [It will be said:] Take him and fetter him, and then expose him to hell-fire, and then insert him in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits. Lo! he used not to believe in God the Tremendous, and urged not on the feeding of the wretched. Therefor hath he no lover here this Day, nor any food save filth which none but sinners eat. [69:13-39]
Ye who believed Our revelations and were Muslims, enter the Garden, ye and your wives, to be made glad. Therein are brought round for them trays of gold and goblets, and therein is all that souls desire and eyes find sweet, and ye are immortal therein. This is the Garden which ye are made to inherit because of what ye used to do. Therein for you is fruit in plenty whence to eat. Lo! the guilty are immortal in hell’s torment. It is not relaxed for them, and they despair therein. We wronged them not, but they it was who did the wrong. [43:69-76]
When the Event befalleth—there is no denying that it will befall—abasing some, exalting others; when the earth is shaken with a shock, and the hills are ground to powder, so that they become a scattered dust and ye will be three kinds: Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!); Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!); and the Outstrippers. The Outstrippers, those are they who will be brought nigh in gardens of delight; a multitude of those of old and a few of those of later time, on lined couches, reclining therein face to face. There wait on them immortal youths with bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, and fruit that they prefer and flesh of fowls that they desire. And there are fair ones (Houris) with wide, lovely eyes, like unto hidden pearls, reward for what they used to do. There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination; naught but the saying: Peace, peace. For those on the right hand, a multitude of those of old and a multitude of those of later time, and those on the left hand: what of those on the left hand? In scorching wind and scalding water and shadow of black smoke neither cool nor refreshing. Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury and used to persist in the awful sin. And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, and also our forefathers? Say [unto them O Muhammad:] Lo! those of old and those of later time will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqûm and will fill your bellies therewith: and thereon ye will drink of boiling water, drinking even as the camel drinketh. This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. [56:1-56]
Mankind was one community; then God sent Prophets as bearers of good tidings and as warners, and revealed therewith the Scripture with the truth that it might judge between mankind concerning that wherein they differed. And those unto whom [scripture] was given differed concerning it, after clear proofs had come unto them, through hatred one of another. And God by His will guided those believe unto the truth of that concerning which they differed. God guideth whom He will unto a straight path. [2:213]
Abraham was not a Jew, nor yet a Christian, but an upright man and a Muslim, and he was not of the idolators. Lo! those of mankind who have the best claim to Abraham are those who followed him, and this Prophet and those who believe with him; God is the Protecting Friend of the believers. A party of the People of the Book long to make you go astray, and they make none to go astray except themselves, but they perceive not. [3:67-69]
Verily We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture and the Command and the Prophethood, and provided them with good things and favoured them above all peoples; and gave them plain commandments. And they differed not until after the knowledge came unto them, through rivalry among themselves. Lo! thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ. And now have We set thee [O Muhammad] on a clear road of Our commandment; so follow it, and follow not the whims of those who know not. [45:16-18]
Say (O Muslims): We believe in God and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the Prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered. [2:136]
The People of the Book ask of thee that thou shouldst cause a Book to descend upon them from heaven. They asked a greater thing of Moses aforetime, for they said: Show us God plainly. The storm of lightning seized them for their wickedness. Then they chose the calf after clear proofs had come unto them. And We forgave them that! And We bestowed on Moses evident authority. And We caused the Mount to tower above them at their covenant, and We bade them: Enter the gate, prostrate! and We bade them: Transgress not the Sabbath! and We took from them a firm covenant. Then because of their breaking of their covenant, and their disbelieving in the revelations of God, and their slaying of the Prophets wrongfully, and their saying: Our hearts are hardened—Nay, but God hath set a seal upon them for their disbelief, so that they believe not save a few—And because of their disbelief and of their speaking against Mary a tremendous calumny; and because of their saying: We slew the Messiah Jesus son of Mary, God’s messenger—they slew him not nor crucified, but it appeared so unto them, and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain. But God took him up unto Himself. God was ever Mighty, Wise…Because of the wrongdoing of the Jews We forbade them good things which had been lawful unto them, and because of their much hindering from God’s way, and of their taking usury when they were forbidden it, and of their devouring people’s wealth by false pretences, We have prepared for those of them who disbelieve a painful doom. But those of them who are firm in knowledge and the believers who believe in that which is revealed unto thee, and that which was revealed before thee, especially the diligent in prayer and those who pay the poor due, the believers in God and the Last Day, upon these We shall bestow immense reward. Lo! We inspire thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him; as We inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and as we imparted unto David the Psalms; and messengers We have mentioned unto thee before and messengers we have not mentioned unto thee; and God spake directly unto Moses; messengers of good cheer and of warning in order that mankind might have no argument against God after the messengers. God was ever Mighty, Wise. [4:153-165]
Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of God and the Seal of the Prophets, and God is aware of all things. [33:40]
We have not sent thee (O Muhammad) save as a bringer of good tidings and a warner to all mankind, but most of mankind know not. [34:28]
Glorify God when it is evening and at morning—and to Him praise in the heavens and the earth—and at afternoon and at noontime. [30:17]
We have seen the turning of thy face to heaven, and now verily We shall make thee turn toward a qiblah which is dear to thee. So turn thy face toward the Holy Mosque and ye (O Muslims) wheresoever ye may be, turn your faces [when ye pray] toward it. [2:144]
O ye who believe! When ye rise up for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands up to the elbows, and lightly rub your heads and wash your feet up to the ankles. And if ye are unclean, purify yourselves. And if ye are sick or on a journey, or one of you cometh from the closet, or ye have had contact with women, and ye find not water, then go to clean, high ground and rub your faces and your hands with some of it. God would not place a burden on you, but He would purify you and would perfect His grace upon you, that ye may give thanks. [5:6]
O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may ward off evil. Fast a certain number of days; and for him who is sick among you, or on a journey, the same number of other days; and for those who can afford it there is a ransom: the feeding of a man in need—But whoso doth good of his own accord, it is better for him: and that ye fast is better for you if ye did but know—the month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Koran, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion of right and wrong. [2:183-184]
Remember when We prepared for Abraham the place of the House, saying: Ascribe thou nothing as partner unto Me and purify My House for those who make the circumambulation and those who stand and those who bow and make prostration. And proclaim unto mankind the Pilgrimage. They will come unto thee on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every deep ravine that they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of God on appointed days over the beast of cattle that He hath bestowed upon them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor unfortunate. Then let them make an end of their unkemptness and pay their vows and go around the ancient House [22:26-29]
Establish worship, pay the poor-due [zakât], and bow your heads with those who bow. [2:43]
God hath blighted usury and made almsgiving fruitful. God loveth not the impious and guilty. [2:276]
O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, and render thanks to God if it is He whom ye worship. He hath forbidden you only carrion, and blood, and swine flesh, and that which hath been sacrificed to any other than God. [2:172-173]
And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice then only one or the captives that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice. And give unto the women [whom ye marry] free gift of their marriage portions; but if they of their own accord remit unto you a part thereof, then ye are welcome to absorb it. 4:3-4]
Wed not idolatresses till they believe; for lo! a believing bondwoman is better than an idolatress though she please you; and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe, for lo! a believing slave is better than an idolater though he please you. [2:221]
Men are in charge of women, because God hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property. So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which God hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then, if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! God is ever High, Exalted, Great. [4:34]
Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and be modest. That is purer for them. Lo! God is aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands’ fathers, or their sons or their husbands’ sons, or their brothers or their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women’s nakedness. [24:31]
Unto the men [of a family] belongeth a share of that which parents and near kindred leave, and unto the women a share of that which parents and near kindred leave, whether it be little or much—a legal share. [4:6]
Warfare is ordained for you, though it is hateful unto you; but it may happen that ye hate a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that ye love a thing which is bad for you. God knoweth, ye know not. [2:216]
They question thee about strong drink [khamr] and games of chance. Say: In both is great sin and utility for men, but the sin of them is greater than their usefulness. [2:219]
O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered; the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. And for him who is forgiven by his brother, prosecution according to usage and payment unto him in kindness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. [2:178]
Slay not your children fearing a fall to poverty. We shall provide for them and for you. Lo! the slaying of them is a great sin. And come not near unto adultery. Lo! it is an abomination and an evil way…Come not near the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better till he come to strength; and keep the covenant. Lo! of the covenant it will be asked. Fill the measure when ye measure, and weigh with a right balance; that is meet, and better in the end. [17:31-35]
Those who believe, and have left their homes and striven with their wealth and their lives in God’s way are of much greater worth in God’s sight. These are they who are triumphant. [9:20]
The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge ye each one of them a hundred stripes. And let not pity for the twain withhold you from obedience to God, if ye believe in God and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment…And those who accuse honorable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them with eighty stripes and never again accept their testimony; they indeed are evil-doers. [24:2 4]
Lo! those who believe (in that which is revealed unto thee, Muhammad) and those who are Jews, and Christians, and Sabaens—whoever believeth in God and the Last Day and doth right—surely their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them, neither shall they grieve. [2:62]
Ye are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind. Ye enjoin right conduct and forbid indency, and ye believe in God. And if the People of the Book had believed it had been better for them. Some of them are believers; but most of them are evil-doers. [3:110]
Thus We have appointed you a middle nation, that ye may be witnesses against mankind, and that the messenger may be a witness against you. [2:143]
He it is Who hath sent His messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religion, averse though the idolators may be. [9:33; 51:9]
When We made a covenant with the Children of Israel: Worship none but God, and be good to parents and to kindred and to orphans and the needy, and speak kindly to mankind; and establish worship and pay the poor-due. Then, after that, ye slid back save a few of you, being averse. [2:83]
Argue not with the People of the Book unless it be in a way that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our God and your God is One, and unto Him we surrender. [29:46]
Thou wilt find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who believe to be the Jews and the idolators. And thou wilt find the nearest of them in affection to those who believe to be those who say: Lo! we are Christians. That is because there are among them priests and monks and because they are not proud. When they listen to that which hath been revealed unto the messenger, thou seest their eyes overflow with tears because of their recognition of the Truth. [5:82-83]
They surely disbelieve who say: Lo! God is the Messiah, son of Mary. The Messiah said: O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. Lo! whoso ascribeth partners unto God, for him God hath forbidden paradise. His abode is the fire. For evil-doers there will be no helpers. They surely disbelieve who say: Lo! God is the third of three, when there is no God save the One God…The Messiah, son of Mary, was no other than a messenger, messengers the like of whom had passed away before him. And his mother was a saintly woman. [5:72-75]
O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is one of them. Lo! God guideth not wrongdoing folk. [5:51]
Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in God nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which God hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the religion of truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low. [9:29]
…Slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them captive, and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. [9:5]
