PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Academic Support Specialist (primary focus: Director, English Language Institute), Department of Second Language Studies (SLS), University of Hawai`i at Manoa (Honolulu, Hawai`i).  July 1996 - present.

As Director, English Language Institute (ELI):  Oversee and assist with development of curricula, materials, and activities.  Oversee and assist with hiring, supervision, and advising of ELI instructors.  Develop, evaluate, interpret, and implement ELI policies.  Encourage and aid instructors’ professional development.  Responsible for maintenance and administration of ELI Placement Test, including supervision of the testing process, analysis of test results, and maintenance of an ELI test results website.  Advise ELI students.  ELI liaison throughout the university community.  Schedule courses and assign teachers.  Substitute for instructors, as needed.  Created and maintain the ELI website.  Oversee and assist with development of online ELI courses. Liaison and development of ELI components of special courses or programs offered by the university, including MBA programs in Japan and Vietnam. Instruction of online ELI courses for Vietnam Executive MBA program.

As Undergraduate Advisor, Department of of Second Language Studies (July 1996-July 2004; January 2010-present):  Advising of students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in SLS.  Assist with hiring, supervision, and advising of instructors for SLS undergraduate courses. Liaison throughout the university community.  Serve on various committees for program and curriculum development, evaluation, and assessment.

Instruction, Department of Second Language Studies

  • Graduate-level courses: SLS 680P: Second Language Pedagogy: Program Administration.  Co-taught with Dr. Robert Gibson and Steve Jacques
  • Supervising various directed-reading courses for undergraduate students.
  • Responsible for developing two undergraduate-level teacher-training courses:
  • SLS 480P: Second Language Teaching: Using Film and Video in Second Language Classrooms. (developed and taught)
  • SLS 480E: Second Language Learning: Strategies for Language Learning and Language Use. (partly developed, not yet taught)
  • As SLS Department Employment Officer. Advise and assist SLS graduate students with job searches and professional employment; establish and maintain relationships with institutions in Hawai`i that employ ESL professionals; creation and maintenance of a job-related website and email list for students and alumni; creation and facilitation of a regularly meeting Professional Development Workshop for graduate students in the SLS Department, which later became the Teacher Portfolio & Preparation Series for graduate students throughout the College of Languages, Linguistics, & Literatures.

    Other responsibilities: Serve on various boards and committees. Co-created and facilitated a Video/Multimedia Special Interest Group from Fall 2005-Fall 2006 semesters.

    Invited Instructor, Center for Asia-Pacific Exchange Teaching Technique Workshops for Korean Elementary, Middle, and High School English Teachers  (Honolulu, Hawai`i).  Summer workshops in 2001, 2006-present.  Winter workshops from 2002-present.

    Conduct teacher-training workshops focusing on teaching techniques, discussion of pedagogical issues faced by Korean elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, and pedagogical applications of second-language theory and methodology.

    Executive Editor, Edutainment Resources, Inc. (Honolulu, HI).  February 2003-present (minimal consulting after 2008).

    Responsible for script development for PencilBot™ DVD-based English language–learning materials.  Assist with hiring of writing team, development of supplementary products, and curriculum development. Additional consulting on other ESL and educational matters, and occasional consulting regarding development of applications for the Apple iPhone and iPad.     

    Part-Time Instructor, Intercultural Communications College (Honolulu, Hawai`i).  May - June 1996.

    Taught in TOEFL Preparation and English Development Programs.  Assisted in the Learning Center (computer and language laboratory).     

    Director of English Education, The Kobe YMCA College (Kobe, Japan).  March 1991 - March 1996.

    Developed curricula, materials, and activities.  Interviewed, hired, supervised, and advised all English instructors.  Encouraged and aided teachers’ professional development.  Handled scheduling of English courses.  Taught conversation, reading, listening, intercultural awareness, English seminars, qualifications-test preparation (TOEIC, TOEFL, Eiken), study-abroad preparation, and special-purpose English classes.  Liaison between English instructors and office administration.  Created students’ English library (reading, listening, and video).  Developed special programs related to English study and use.

    English Instructor, Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (Kobe, Japan).  April 1993 - March 1996.

    Taught English composition and conversation classes to students in the English, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese departments.  Developed curricula, materials, and activities for all classes taught.

    English Instructor, Kobe YMCA College (Kobe, Japan).   April 1987 - April 1990.                        Taught conversation, listening, and special-purpose English classes.  Developed materials and activities.  Assisted with textbook review and selection.

    English Instructor (Part Time.  Kobe and Ashiya, Japan).   April 1987 - March 1990, April 1991 - March 1992, March 1995 - March 1996.

    Taught English conversation and composition to a variety of students, from beginning through advanced levels of ability, at The Kobe YMCA Langauge Center, ECC, Seido Language Institute, and Soshukan Juku and Language School.

    Asian Culture and Travel:  Have often traveled in a number of Asian countries, both with family and as leader of school exchange programs.  Interested in Asian cultures, foods, philosophies and issues regarding development.

    Literature:  I am particularly interested in literature that influenced American thought in the 1960s and 1970s.

    Languages:  Japanese language (high-intermediate conversational ability and low-intermediate reading and writing ability)

    Other:  Writing (fiction and free-verse poetry).
