Placement Testing Information

After submitting a University of Hawaii System Application Form, the second step in the community college entrance process is to take a placement test.

The University of Hawaii Community College system administers the ACT Computerized Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) in Math, English, and English as a Second Language.

The COMPASS is probably the most important test that you will take in your college career. The results of your test determines your eligibility to take college level courses, or to take other courses that require certain pre-requisite levels of Math and/or English. It will determine how much time it will take you to earn a degree. Most importantly, it will determine how much money you will spend in tuition.

COMPASS test results are used as an entrance test to determine eligibility for certain selective admissions programs.

The Testing Center also administers foreign language tests. These tests determine the appropriate starting level above the introductory 101 classes. Languages offered are: Chinese, French, Filipino (Tagalog), Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

Photo ID required for ALL services: NO ID -- NO TEST.

The following forms of photo identification are accepted:

  • UH or any UH Community College student or faculty ID
  • Drivers license
  • State ID
  • Passport
  • Military ID
  • Permanent Resident Card (I-151 or I-551)
  • High-school ID (for those without any of the above IDs)
