Thomas M. Payette, FAIA, RIBA

Thomas M. Payette has over 35 years of experience in the design of medical institutions, research laboratories and academic facilities and serves as the Design Director of the Payette Studio - one of the firm’s three design studios.  Mr. Payette is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.  He recently served on the board of the Boston Architectural Center, is a former president and member of the Boston Society of Architects, and was instrumental in the founding of the Boston Foundation for Architecture where he served as board chairman.  Mr. Payette served as President and CEO of Payette Associates from 1965 until 1998.

Mr. Payette was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering, magna cum laude, from Michigan State University and earned a Master of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design.  He is a Registered Architect in 23 states and holds a certificate from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.  Mr. Payette is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a member of the visiting committee for the Harvard Graduate School of Design .

During his career, Mr. Payette has been an active practitioner, teacher, lecturer and design juror.  His academic assignments include Assistant Professor, Design Critic at the Rhode Island School of Design; Jury Member for Student Design Projects at Harvard University Gradate School of Design, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology ; and Lecturer at Universities and Professional Development Seminars.

Mr. Payette has provided design direction for numerous projects, including the Aga Khan University, Hospital and Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan; Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, Maine; University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio; Science Research Center at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina; Lewis Thomas Laboratory and Frick Chemistry Buildings for Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey; Biomedical Research Building at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio; and the master plan at Genetics Institute, Andover, Massachusetts.
