NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION:
The Shanti Weekend House is located across
the harbor from Bombay in a rural landscape with hills and farms in
the surroundings. It is constructed with load bearing masonry walls
and steel sections for roof. It responds to its locale’s tropical
climate and combines different sustainable technologies appropriate to
weathering and environmental impact. It is a retreat Farm house
for an urban couple and accentuates the rural-urban divide, an
issue that will is becoming an increasingly crucial issue as cities in
India expand to colonize their hinterland.

JURY COMMENTS:
The
architect has successfully anchored this retreat house in local tradition
with a seemingly universal solution. He has connected the simplicity of the indigenous building craft of
India with a modern treatment of space and architectural detailing.
He is paving a new approach for contemporary Indian architects
(Indian Minimalism) that is rooted in tradition but does not attempt to
arrest it in a stylistic imagery.
