1995 Juror Profile

Fumihiko Maki
Maki and Associates

A graduate of the University of Tokyo and the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, Fumihiko Maki is one of the most respected architects in the world today. He is a member of the Japan Institute of Architects and an Honorary Fellow of both The American Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects. He has taught and lectured widely at institutions such as Washington University, Harvard University and the University of Tokyo.

A master at fusing the best of both east and west, Maki is internationally acknowledged for his innovation, diversity and incomparable technical excellence. Some of his best known works are the Hillside Terrace Apartments in Tokyo, the Iwasaki Art Museum in Kagoshima, the Fujisawa Municipal Gymnasium in Kanagawa, the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, the Spiral and Tepia buildings in Tokyo, and the Nippon Convention Center in Makuhari Messe, Chiba.

Maki has received numerous awards during his distinguished career, including the Reynolds Memorial Award, the Wolf Prize, the Chicago Architecture Award, the Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture, the UIA Gold Medal and the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
