1995 Juror Profile

Charles Correa
Charles Correa Architects/Planners
Bombay, India

Charles Correa studied architecture at the University of Michigan and at M.I.T. and has been in private practice in Bombay, India since 1958. All of his work-from the planning of New Bombay to the carefully detailed memorial to Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad-has placed special emphasis on prevailing resources, energy and climate as major determinants in the ordering of space.

One of the pioneers in developing low-cost shelter in emerging nations, Correa has done a considerable amount of work on optimal patterns of housing for the poor and the trade-off that exists between constructed and open spaces in warm climates.

His work has been published in several architectural journals and books, and he has lectured and taught at numerous universities around the world, including the University of London, the Royal Society of Arts, London, M.I.T., Tulane and Harvard University. Correa has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri from the President of India, the R.I.B.A. Gold Medal (1984), the Gold Medal of the Indian Institute of Architects (1987), and the UIA Gold Medal of the International Union of Architects (1990).
