NICE VOCABULARY LINKS: The Internet and Studying Vocabulary

Here are some places to research, study and practice vocabulary on the Web!

Reference sites:

• http://www.wordsmyth.net/ Wordsmyth has an online dictionary and thesaurus especially designed for learners of English.
• http://www.m-w.com/ The Merriam Webster site has activities such as a "word a day" in addition to the online dictionary and thesaurus.
• http://dir.yahoo.com/Reference/Dictionaries/ If you need a bilingual or specialized dictionary, you can probably find it through Yahoo's dictionary directory.
• http://www-math.uni-paderborn.de/dictionaries/Dictionaries.html Here's a list of links to many specialized online dictionaries, thesauri, etc. Check out the official Rap dictionary!
• http://www.voycabulary.com/ VoyCabulary.com is a online tool that allows you to link everyword of text in a web page to a dictionary. All you need to do is click on a word and you get a definition or translation.

Check out the usage and associations with concordancers:

• http://www.edict.com.hk/concordance/ A user friendly one from the Virtual Language Centre.
• http://titania.cobuild.collins.co.uk/form.html Cobuild's Direct Corpus Sampler has concordances and collocations. A great way to build associations, "word forks" and see usage! Not as user friendly as the VLC site, but more powerful.

• http://www.ohiou.edu/esl/english/vocabulary.html A nice compilation of links to vocabulary activities and study sites rom Ohio University.
• http://www.vocabulary.com/ Exercises for all levels.
• http://home.earthlink.net/~ruthpett/safari/index.htm Very advanced, but fun way to learn difficult academic words and explore the web.
• http://www.resourceroom.net/Comprehension/comprehension.html more on word parts.
• http://www.it.uom.gr/elu/vocabula.htm This site provides links to vocabulary activities at several well-known ESL and language learning sites.
• http://www.pacificnet.net/~sperling/quiz/ Some quizzes and slang http://www.eslcafe.com/slang/and idioms http://www.eslcafe.com/idioms/ are a few of the many activities at Dave's ESL Cafe.
• http://www.wordfocus.com/index-website.html Focusing on Words, has a lot vocabulary activities and background information, you can also become a member to a list and get a newsletter.
• http://www.wordwizard.com/ The Word Wizard will answer your vocabulary questions and has many amusing word activities and contests- check out the "slang street."
• http://www.wordsmith.org/awad/index.html You can check for daily words and do some activities. Follow the links to subscribe and join a list to get a "Word a Day" emailed to you.
