THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP

PHYL 160

Student Sleep Journal

Each student in PHYL 160 is required to keep a personal Sleep Journal of their daily sleep habits over a six-week period during the semester.  At the end of the semester the students’ can summarize their recorded sleep habits and generate a sleep report.  The sleep report (worth 100 points) will be assessed as part of their final grade.

The Student Sleep Journal format is up to each individual student, but it is recommended that the student create a standardized data sheet that can be duplicated for consistency and to make the data collection easier.  See the instructor for further information about data sheet formats.

The following information is required in the Student Sleep Journal:

  1.  Date
  2.  Time you went to bed
  3.  Time you went to sleep
  4.  Time you woke up
  5.  Number of times you awakened during the night
  6.  Amount of time awake during the night
  7.  Total Nighttime sleep
  8.  Number of daytime naps
  9.  Starting time of the nap
  10.  Length of time of each nap
  11.  Total Napping Time

Students may choose to record other variables associated with daily sleep habits such as body temperature, heart rate etc. before and after sleep that might enhance their sleep report.

A sample of a sleep data collection sheet can be found here.
