Then What Happened?
The first MLB All-Star Game WAS one to remember. But what has it done for today's game of baseball and to the sports world in general? I believe that at some point, not a specific date or time, but at some point, baseball changed. From 1959-1962 an extra All-Star game was played each season to raise money for the players' pension funds (and for some other causes). It seemed like players were still honest "working Joes" until a certain point, maybe into the 60's or 70's. By the 80's though, something was definitely starting to go wrong! Take a look at some of the players of the 1970's: Mike Schmidt, Dave Kingman, Joe Morgan, and Reggie Jackson. Take a good look at these players, because these were the last truly "clean" superstars the MLB would have for awhile.
