How It All Began

1933 All-Star Game Official Program

First MLB All-Star Game Program

The Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game tradition began in 1933 at the World's Fair in Chicago. A sports editor for The Chicago Tribune, Arch Ward, began the tradition by insisting the game be held. He (and baseball) originally thought the game would be a one time thing. The game's fantastic success resulted in making the game a yearly ritual. The first All-Star Game was attended by 49,200 people from across the continent. The American League (AL) won the game by a score of 4-2, with Babe Ruth hitting the first All-Star game home run. Home runs and All-Star games would grow to go hand in hand, but what actually happened during the game.
