Research Interests:

Viruses cause devastating diseases of many vegetable, ornamental, and fruit crops in Hawaii. For example, Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) limits production of banana. The goal of my research program is to develop new knowledge on virus-plant and virus-vector interactions and to use this knowledge to resolve virus problems of economic crops in Hawaii. We have been working on the detection, characterization, and control of major tropical plant viruses on important crops in Hawaii, including following viruses or virus-like diseases: (1) Banana bunchy top virus, (2) Pineapple mealybug wilt associated closteroviruses, and (3) Citrus Tristeza virus. We are also using NPR1-regulated systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to develop broad-spectrum resistance to control plant diseases in economically important crop plants.
