Web Page Project

Purpose of this Exercise:

Obviously web development skills are very marketable these days, and just about every business enviornment will require that someone knows how to design and build web pages. Since you've already learned how to build a simple web page using MS FrontPage in ICS 101, we want you to go above and beyond that.

Your Task:

Take one of the ficticious companies listed below (or make one up on your own) and design a web page for them. If you know of a REAL company that needs a web page, you may do it for them as well!! (If you charge that company to build the page, that is completely separate from this assignment and legal. You might be able to get points as well as real cash! Plus you would have more real world experience. This is actually the better approach!) If you don't remember how to make web pages from ICS 101 exactly, come see me. You will need to know how to make at least a basic page and upload it to a web server to become a real "live" website.

Your web page will be graded on the following criteria:

• Creativity - It should look nice! I know this is a somewhat subjective criteria but I will find reasonable judges. But you should make it look professional yet fancy.
• Organization - Your site should be very easy to navigate and find all of the necessariy information.
• How well it fits the company - Your web page should fit the client company well. If you're going to do a bank then you might not be interested in fancy multimedia but you will be interested in heavy security. On the other hand if you're doing this for an entertainment company, then yes graphics and sound are very important. I'll be grading on how appropriate your page is for your company.
• Advanced Technology - Since you're able to create basic web pages from what you've learned in ICS 101, I will be expecting to see you try to learn at least one kind of new technology. This can include: animations, multimedia, streaming audio/video, secure transactions, Shockwave or Flash, Java or CGI applets, Javascript or VBscript, etc. Remember if you know one already, I expect you to try to learn a new one. Certain technologies you will not be able to implement on uhunix. If you are going to try out one of these technologies (like CGI scripts and secure transaction), let me know. I am planning on building my own webserver strictly for this class, and giving people special accounts on it to try out some of these things. Or you can find your own web host to house your web page.

Construction Journal:

On the main page you should provide a link to another page called "Construction Journal" or "Construction Report". In this document, is where you will explain everything that you did to the client company. Just like in the shopping projects and the database project, your rationalle and explanation of all of your thinking is utmost important. You must explain to the company exactly why you chose certain things, why you designed things the way you did, how it will profit their company, etc. And of course as always, it's written for the company (NOT me) so you have to explain to them in language that they fully understand.

Deliverables:

Just the web page itself actually. On the day it is due, I will have a sign in page. You are to write your name, e-mail, and URL down where I can find your webpage. I will then go out to the web and inspect your web page.
