Database Project

Due Date: Friday, October 19th

Weight: 75 Points

Scenaro:

The Cinnamon Trails Culinary Academy is setting up their database for Fall 2001. They have many students lined up for classes, and they're trying to organize all of the registration information. They need some help. But besides their basic transaction processing, they would like to know more about analytical information about their students and their classes, so that they can plan their classes better for the spring.

Your task:

Given the following information, construct a database based on the following information. You will then hand in a short written report and present your findings. The report should be well written, professional, and eye catching (not unlike your shopping projects). You are to include basic summary information, such as class lists and enrollment numbers, but also you should investigate interesting queries. For example, you may want to investigate which instructor gets paid the most vs. which instructor has the most students. If you realize the one who teaches the most isn't making the most, you may suggest a raise for that instructor. You may investigate which classes are the most popular with certain age groups, and suggest some discounts based that information. You may try to investigate information that I haven't provided, such as the ratio of Males vs. Females, and make some conclusions about that. Whatever queries you come up with, are entirely up to you. You will be graded on whether or not you are asking the right questions as well as your discussion of your results. You must explain why you are asking these questions, what importance does it have to the company, as well as the your conclusions. Your report should include: a cover, an introductory paragraph, summary information of classes (your OLTP function), at least 3-4 good investigations (your OLAP function), and some decent concluding paragraphs. The information should be presented nicely (ie, use graphs and very small tables).
