These documents are provided here in PDF format -- easier to print and go back and read when you don't want to/can't go online. They also make for nice gifts to friends who are contemplating the big move, as I've done to .. er, for ... many of my friends. (Yes, they still are my friends.) The original URLs are inside each document.

Curiously, the more interesting documents in this group were written by computer science (or science in general) students. Be that as it may, they are still excellent reads for students in other fields. The quotes are from the documents themselves.

Networking on the Network. 2003.06.11. Phil Agre

I want to get "Networking on the Network" into the hands of every PhD student in the world. If you could help me out with this goal, I would much appreciate it.

"So long, and thanks for the Ph.D.!" a.k.a. "Everything I wanted to know about C.S. graduate school at the beginning but didn't learn until later." The 4th guide in the Hitchhiker's guide trilogy (and if that doesn't make sense, you obviously have not read Douglas Adams). 1997. Raymond T. Azuma.

A computer science graduate school survival guide, intended for prospective or novice graduate students. This guide describes what I wish I had known at the start of graduate school but had to learn the hard way instead. It focuses on mental toughness and the skills a graduate student needs. The guide also discusses finding a job after completing the Ph.D. and points to many other related web pages.

Why Do a PhD? Douglas Comer.
at the department colloquium coffee hour, several students engaged the faculty in a discussion about our Ph.D. program. It became clear that many of the students did not understand the basics; they were surprised at some of the questions and confused by some of the answers. These notes provide basic information about the purpose of a Ph.D. program in an attempt to help students decide whether to pursue a Ph.D. degree.

The Ph.D. Octopus. 1903. William James.
We dangle our three magic letters before the eyes of these predestined victims, and they swarm to us like moths to an electric light.
Have Doctorate, Will Work. 1995(?). Austin Tice.
In a dismal job market for humanities PhDs, the Web shepherds the overeducated in their flight from academics.
