You must download and install three pieces of free software before you can use my files.

  1. Download Allume's (Aladdin/Stuffit) Expander.
  2. Download Apple's QuickTime.
  3. Download Adobe's Acrobat Reader.

Free Stuff and Bargain Products!

Below are links to supplementary materials I've put together for use with the Integrated Chinese textbook series.

You will need to download Aladdin/Stuffit Expander (either Mac or PC) in order to unstuff the contents of the files provided here (either .SIT or .BIN). Allume offers totally free (Mac) or free trial (PC) downloads. The trial version is good for 15 days, so I would suggest downloading all of the files you need, decompress them all and back them up in a safe place (e.g., burn them to a CD). (No, I will not consider making the files available as straight PDFs or in .zip format. Thank you for not asking.)

Most of the PDF files below are generated with James Walker's PrintToPDF (only works on MacOS 7.x-9.2.2) and require Adobe's Acrobat Reader. (Since what few characters there are on these answer sheets have been generated as images, version 3.x of the Reader might work, but I haven't been able to test that. If version 3.x does not work, then try version 4.0.5 or later and install the Asian Font Packs for Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Please send me a message and let me know if you have any problems with these files with either version.)

The Reader can also function as a low-cost (it doesn't get much lower than free!) flashcard presentation software.

Blank Chinese Character Writing Practice Grid Sheets

This file contains five different grid layouts for students to practice writing their characters on. The first two (pp. 1-2) are mainly for practicing individual characters and vocabulary, the last two (pp. 4-5) are mainly designed for compositions, while the third one (p. 3) can serve either function.

Answer Sheets

These answer sheets are for use with the Integrated Chinese Level One Workbook. There are several reasons why these answer sheets were developed.

  1. Some students don't want to tear the sheets out of their Workbooks;
  2. Sometimes it is difficult returning Workbooks in time for students to complete the next set of homework assignments;
  3. Most teachers don't want to collect and carry around complete Workbooks from an entire class (we like to call this function of the answer sheets "preventative health care maintenance"); and,
  4. The workbooks, as they are, were not designed following a logical sequence deeper than L1, L2, etc. Within each section exercises are simply thrown in without regard for what part of a lesson they are related to or student ability at any given time. (I hear this will be remedied in future editions of the Workbooks.)

The links provided here are for PDF copies. PDF will maintain a universal standard of formatting across platforms, useful if you want to make standard answer keys. Chinese software is NOT necessary to view the PDF files. Answers to Workbook problems are NOT provided; for that one needs to purchase a copy of the Integrated Chinese Teacher's Manual from Cheng & Tsui.

Character Deconstruction and Formation

These files, as thier names indicate, contain character deconstructions and formations for the characters introduced in Integrated Chinese Level One Part One (~675k) and Part Two (~650k). I've tried to remain as true to etymologies (Shuo Wen, Hanyu Da Zidian, Wieger, Wilder & Ingram), and was able to for the most part, but sometimes I made concessions for the sake of beginning learners. Hopefully the transgressions aren't too egregious, but I'm sure some of my choices will be contested. Not as fun as the Peng books, but something I hope proves useful.

40 Common Chinese Radicals Posters

These files contain the 40 common Chinese character radicals as introduced in Integrated Chinese Level One Character Workbook, for traditional (~300k) and simplified (~300k) together on one page. Print them out and hang them up for quick and easy reference!

Gradesheet Database

This ClarisWorks 4.0 database file is designed for use with the Integrated Chinese Level One textbook. It can be modified fairly easily for the second semester of Level One or the Level Two textbook. While it was created using ClarisWorks 4.0, users of AppleWorks 5.0 and above should also be able to put it to work. Please let me know if you make any improvements to it or if you need help tailoring it to your curriculum. (Also, if someone could remind me what the three-letter suffix for AppleWorks is so I can provide this to IBM-PC users as well, I would appreciate it.)

Online Flashcard Software Data Files

This file is for use with the Integrated Chinese Level One Textbook. Please go to Loopware's iFlash website, download the iFlash application (written by David McGavern), and get the file from within that app. As far as I know, there is no PC version of this software. Oh, well.

Generic Answer Sheets

These answer sheets are for use in testing yourself with the Online Flashcard programs mentioned above. Depending on how you want to test yourself, the answer sheets come in three slightly different formattings:

C - P - E
Answer Sheet

If you are testing your learning of pinyin and English definitions, you should use the Chinese character(s) - Pinyin - English formatted file. With this form, you simply fill in the characters in the first column of lines as they appear onscreen. Then from memory, and before clicking forward, fill in the pinyin and English definitions. Mark yourself for correct and incorrect answers. To get the most benefit from the exercises, be true to yourself and don't fill in or change an answer after you've seen it displayed.

P - C - E
Answer Sheet

If you are testing your learning of Chinese characters and English, you should use the Pinyin - Chinese character(s) - English formatted file. With this form, you simply fill in the pinyin romanizations in the first column of lines as they appear onscreen. Then from memory, and before clicking forward, fill in the Chinese character(s) and English definitions. Mark yourself for correct and incorrect answers. To get the most benefit from the exercises, be true to yourself and don't fill in or change an answer after you've seen it displayed.

E - C - P
Answer Sheet

If you are testing your learning of Chinese characters and pinyin romanizations, you should use the English - Chinese character(s) - Pinyin formatted file. With this form, you simply fill in the English definitions (or part of it) in the first column of lines as they appear onscreen. Then from memory, and before clicking forward, fill in the Chinese character(s) and pinyin romanizations. Mark yourself for correct and incorrect answers. To get the most benefit from the exercises, be true to yourself and don't fill in or change an answer after you've seen it displayed.

Roleplay Situations

The original file was created by H. Lin Domizio at Brown University for Integrated Chinese Level Two textbook. I cleaned it up a bit and modified it creating a new file for use in Hawai'i.

PowerPoint Jeopardy Review

The original PowerPoint template was created by Sara Duncan at OKTechMasters for general use. I cleaned it up a bit and modified it creating a new file (4.8 Mb .ZIP, use WinZIP, Aladdin Expander, or similar to unstuff) for use as a review for Integrated Chinese Level Two, Lessons 6 & 7. Feel free to download and play with your students or use in an educational setting. There are images and audio within that may be copyrighted somewhere. It is offered as is, and cannot be resold or included on any compilation CD without my permission.

Word up

The Integrated Chinese Textbook series includes a two-part Level One (six books altogether: Part 1 Textbook, Workbook, and Character Workbook, and Part 2 Textbook, Workbook, and Character Workbook) and a one-part Level Two (two books, Textbook and Workbook). Series details and purchasing links can be found at the Integrated Chinese Home Page.
