CHN201 - INTERMEDIATE MANDARIN
Fall 2003

Section 001 MTWRF 8:30 - 9:20 a.m. Moore 204

Instructor: Jeffrey J. Hayden ( / / ) Office: Moore 372
Office Hours: MWF 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., and by appointment Telephone: 956-6881
Web Page: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~jeffrey/ eMail: jeffrey@hawaii.edu

Goals & Objectives
Students will gain listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in standard (Mandarin) Chinese, attaining approximately the Intermediate Mid level on the ACTFL/ETS proficiency scale (1 on the ILR/DLI scale). Specifically, students will achieve the following:

Listening
Be able to understand paragraph-length utterances pertaining to a wide range of topics relating to daily life (including lodging/living quarters, sending and receiving international mail, sports, traveling, transportation, and communication) as well as events removed in space and time from the speaker (for instance, past experiences, future plans, and current news events). Will be able to understand the outline of plots in episodes from soap operas and popular movies.
Speaking
Be able to handle successfully a wide range of task-oriented and social functions pertaining to such topic areas as those mentioned above, participating fully in casual conversations. Will be able to narrate, describe, compare and contrast.
Reading
Be able to identify key facts and some details in descriptive material on daily life, news events, and carefully written personal communications. Can discern linkages among sentences in simple connected text. Will be able to understand a wide range of authentic texts dealing with basic personal and social needs, such as signs, public announcements, and short, straightforward instructions dealing with public life.
Writing
Be able to take notes in some detail. Can write notes and simple letters, brief synopses, summaries and biographical data and of work and school experience.

Text & Materials Student Responsibilities 1. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Absences without valid reasons will affect your grade. Anyone who is late for more than 15 minutes will be regarded as absent. Five to nine (5-9) absences will lower your grade one step (A becomes B, B becomes C, C becomes D, etc.), ten (10) absences will lower your grade two steps.

2. Class Preparation and Participation: All students are expected to participate actively in the day's language practice. Students' class participation and performance will be evaluated daily and a final score will be given at the end of each class period on a regular basis on the following scale:

4 = On time (no more than 5 minutes late) and well-prepared with excellent performance
3 = Between 5-10 minutes late and/or giving only some indication of good preparation
2 = Between 10-15 minutes late and/or participating with what seems inadequate preparation
1 = Between 10-15 minutes late and/or present with almost no participation
0 = Absent (including being more than 15 minutes late)

3. Homework and Assignments: You will be responsible for turning in ALL homework and assignments on the day due (see syllabus). NO HOMEWORK WILL ACCEPTED LATE WITHOUT A VALID REASON. You are expected to go to the language lab and practice listening to the tapes and reading aloud new text EVERY DAY. Practice writing characters EVERY DAY! No language can be acquired overnight. The only way to build up your Chinese language proficiency is gradually through constant practice.

4. Quizzes and Tests: Every effort should be made to take quizzes and tests at the specified times. If you know that you must miss a class ahead of time, tell the teacher before that class. Quizzes and tests cannot be made up unless arrangements are made BEFORE being absent from class (remember, communication is key). No one is allowed to make up a missed test without a valid, written excuse.

You are reminded that each student's background, interest, learning style, difficulties and goals are different. Please be patient with each other and do not hesitate to see the teacher for extra help or explanations in certain areas.

Grading
Final course grades will be based on the results of:

1. Attendance and In-class Productivity: 25%
2. Vocabulary Quizzes (10%) and Unit Tests (10%): 20%
3. Homework and Other Assignments: 25%
4. Midterm (written 5% plus oral 5%): 10%
5. Final (written 10% plus oral 10%): 20%

Final Grade: 90-640 = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, 0-59% = F
