Born in Korea, Hye-ryeon graduated
from Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, Korea in 1984. She came to the United States in 1986 for her
graduate studies. She received an M.A.
degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from University of Wisconsin at
Madison in 1988. She received another
M.A. degree in Political Science and a Ph.D. degree in Communication from
Stanford University.
She worked as a research faculty at
the Arizona Cancer Center of the University of Arizona between 1995 and 2001.
She joined the faculty of Department of Speech at the University of Hawaii at
Manoa in the fall of 2001. She also
serves as faculty at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, the Center for
Korean Studies, and the Population Studies Program at the University of Hawaii
at Manoa. Her research and teaching
interest includes political communication, health communication, social science
methods and persuasion.
She is also serving as the President
of the Korean American Communication
Association since 2005.
