Light science

Modern optics studies the nature of electromagnetic wave of a wide wavelength range, from infrared, visible to ultraviolet even x-ray. The invention of laser has boosted the optical science to a new level. Laser technology can be found almost everywhere today.

Free Electron Laser (FEL) is a laser different from all conventional lasers because it uses highly relativistic electrons as gain medium instead of excited electrons bounded in atoms. The inventor of FEL, Dr.John M.J. Madey, is leading a group at University of Hawaii. They are trying to understand the basic FEL physics and applying the unique laser in various fields such as remote sensing and high resolution spectroscopy.

About me

Pic 1

I am originally from China. I got my Ph.D. degree from Department of Physics & Astronomy, University of Hawaii at Manoa, where my areas of research were high resolution spectroscopy, Fourier transform spectrometer and remote sensing.

I am currently a postdoctoral scholar at Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, University of California, Irvine. My research interests are applications of laser in biomedical technology.

The best thing about open source is the freedom.

I use many open source softwares in my research to improve the effciency and productivity.

  • GSL and Maxima for scientific calculation
  • Gnuplot for data plotting
  • Xfig for vector graphics drawing
  • LaTeX for document and presentation preparation
