 Beyond Chineseness: Graduate Symposium

With the recent exhibition of Xu Bing’s works in the Smithsonian, with the twenty-one years participation of Chinese artists in the Venice Biennialle and various other high profile exposures of contemporary Chinese art, the contemporary art world is no longer complete if China is left out. As Chinese artists struggle between tradition and modernity or concepts of east and west, cultural individuality and diversity are constantly articulated in their works as well as in their forming identity.

As a part of graduate training, students and professors in the Department of Art, University of Hawaii, have organized the First Graduate Symposium “Beyond Chineseness,” in which papers and discussions are centered on various issues of China’s new art.

The symposium will take place at the Auditorium, Art Building
