852 field

a)  Code First indicator, Shelving scheme, for type of call number contained in that tag.  Revise incorrect 1st indicators in 852 tags as encountered.   Incorrect 1st indicators will affect call number searches.

Indicator 1 (Type of call number)
0 = Library of Congress
2 = National Library of Medicine
3 = SuDoc
8 = Other

b)  Code the Second indicator, Shelving order, as 1 in most cases, for serials and MPIs; code 2 only when the item carries two numbering schemes and is shelved by the secondary numbering.  If editing the mfhd for serials or MPIs, correct the migrated default second indicator value of blank to 1 (or 2, if appropriate).   Second indicator can remain blank for single-part items (or optionally, can be coded 0 (zero)).

blank = No information provided
0 = Not enumeration  (items are not shelved by enumeration)
1 = Primary enumeration
2 = Alternative enumeration

c)  Subfield b, Location code
Open a list of locations with CTRL L, and select a loc code from this list.  Or, you can type in the location code.  Or, your preferences can be set for automatic addition of location.

d)  Subfields h, Classification, and subfield i, Item part (remainder of call no.)
In creating and editing holdings records divide LC call number in the 852 tag into subfield h and subfield i, corresponding to subfields a and b in the bib record call number fields (050, 090).  Close up extra spaces in LC call numbers which resulted from call number parsing practice in the former system, UHCARL.

SuDocs numbers will appear entirely in the subfield $h, exactly as it appears in the associated bib record's 086 $a subfield. Divide SuDocs (bib call no. tag 086) monographic class numbers into subfield h and subfield i between the class stem and the Cutter, e.g.:  |h D 1.2: |i H 35.  Serial class numbers go entirely in subfield h.

Enter Other style call numbers (call nos. in field 099 or accession-style call number types) into a single subfield h.

No retrospective clean-up is planned for CARL call numbers that migrated as a single subfield h of the 852 tag, but if you have reason to edit an 852 tag, do take time to divide call numbers and insert subfield i.

e)  Subfield t, Copy information
Use the standard copy number format generated during the migration (e.g. Copy 2, Copy 3), when adding copy information in a subfield t.  Correct or delete copy number information which migrated in a different format to standard.

Delete erroneous serials copy numbers with leading zeros, or copy numbers beginning with a letter followed by numbers, which resulted from migration of SerLev3 data from the former system, UHCARL.

Do not enter copy 1 information in subfield t.  Voyager supplies the default text "Copy 1" in WebPAC display for first copy of an item.  The vast majority of copy 1 records lack this information.  Delete such information when you find it in a holdings record.

Make sure copy number information in holdings records matches the information in associated item records.  Holdings record data shows up in WebPAC while item data appears on circulation notices.  They need to agree.

f)  Subfield j, Shelving control number
Use of subfield j in accession-type call numbers is optional.  Libraries are not required to use it, but no library will be prevented from using it.

g)  Subfield k, Call number prefix
Enter sub-locations in angle brackets in subfield k.   E.g.,  ‡k <Nan'yo>
