PLAN B PAPERS

Special Collections acquires selected papers written by candidates for non-thesis plan UHM Master's degrees.  These are called "Plan B" papers, distinct from theses and dissertations.  Hawn Collection librarians requested standard wording on the bib records for these, presumably to make word searching more reliable.

Beginning March, 2005, catalogers should add a standard 500 note to bib records for Plan B papers, in the following format:

500 __ ‡a Plan B paper, [M.A., M.S., etc.], [discipline], University of Hawaii at Manoa, [year].

Example:

500 __ ‡a Plan B paper, M.A., Pacific Islands Studies, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2004.

Earlier bib records have a variety of notes, often quoted from the piece.  Optional: If you are touching one of these records, revise the note to the new standard wording.
Examples:

"A Plan B paper submitted in partial fulfilment for the Master's degree in Pacific Islands Studies."

"Center for Pacific Islands Studies, Plan B Paper."

"Pacific Islands Studies MA Program, Plan B paper, University of Hawaii at Manoa campus."

"A Plan B paper presented to the faculty of the College of Education, University of Hawai`i in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Education."
