OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Hawai'i Review publishes all forms
of literature, including works which focus on Hawaii
and the Pacific. Hawaii Review accepts solicited and
unsolicited works of poetry, fiction, literary non-fiction,
and visual art; including plays, short-short stories,
reviews, translations, essays, personal essays, and
humor.
WRITING GUIDELINES
ALL MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS must be typed, double-spaced, crisp originals/copies on 8-1/2" x 11" paper and must include: the writer's name, address, phone number, and number of words (prose) or lines (poetry) at the top right-hand corner of the first page; numbered pages; and a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with proper postage for reply. Please indicate whether you would like the manuscript returned and include enough postage on the SASE for the manuscript.
FICTION: Please submit no more than one manuscript with a maximum length of 9,000 words (23 double-spaced pages) per submission. More than one manuscript for short-short fiction or several chapters from novels are acceptable if they do not exceed 7,000 words total.
POETRY: Please submit no more than eight double-spaced poems per submission. Longer poems, up to 500 lines (20 double-spaced pages) will be considered; however, space limitations aremore likely to be taken into account.
NONFICTION: Please submit no more than one manuscript at a time, up to 10,000 words (28 double-spaced pages) per manuscript. All nonfiction manuscripts must include complete documentation conforming to the MLA Handbook of Style. For book reviews, please submit no more than two manuscripts, each between 500 and 1,500 words (2 to 6 pages) long. Manuscript reviews must include at the top of the first page the title of the literary work being reviewed, the names of the author and writers of introductions/forwards/afterwards, publisher's information, publication date, number of pages, and price of cloth/paper/hardcover copies.
TRANSLATIONS: Please include a copy of the original piece, and indicate the copyright statusof the original.
VISUAL ARTS: Submissions of
photography, and photographs of non-photographic artwork(paintings,
three-dimensional art, etc.), must be printed on 8" x 10"
glossyblack-and-white photos. Black-and-white drawings and paintings
may be submitted on 8-1/2" x 11" paper. Artwork may
also be submitted on slides. Artists may submit up to 10 pieces
of art per submission. Include, in clear print, on the back
side of each piece: the artist's name, address, phone number,
title, date, and medium. Include SASE with proper postage for
return of art with response.
