Wanda Chun

Born: Hong Kong, China
Cantonese Opera - Master

Agnes Chan, apprentice, speaks about Wanda Chun:

"I was born in China but raised in Hong Kong. When I was a small kid my mother used to love to go to the Cantonese Opera. All I can remember is the glitter and those faces. After that I moved to America. Then there was one night that I saw Wanda performing...and when I heard her sing I was admiring her, and I said...she’s got to be my teacher."

Chinese Opera

Cantonese Opera has been performed in Hawai‘i for a long time. By the 19th century, there were already several professional troupes visiting Hawai‘i. Actually, the local Chinese community has been performing different operas for nearly a hundred years in Honolulu. There are five Cantonese Opera clubs that practice their music, voice and theater on a regular basis. In Chinatown, after all the shops have closed and the hustle and bustle of the city is quiet, you can find dedicated musicians singing and playing late into the night. After these rehearsals, everybody sits together and eats a delicious meal.
