Jolene Smith graduated from the University of Stellenbosch,
South Africa in 1997. She received a postgraduate certification
in orthopedic manual therapy from the Maitland Institute of America and
a certificate of achievement in pelvic floor physical therapy
from the American Physical Therapy Association.
Jolene specializes in Orthopedics and Women's Health and has worked in these
fields in South Africa, Great Britain and New York City before
moving to Honolulu. She is an advocate for the physical therapist’s
role during the child-bearing years, when tremendous stress
is placed on the musculoskeletal system, particularly the
back, sacro-iliac joints and the pelvic floor. Serious injuries
later in life can often be avoided by addressing the small,
nagging issues during these years, for example mild incontinence,
back or neck pain, sacro-iliac joint dysfunctions and carpal
tunnel syndrome.
She strongly believes in the role of manual
therapy, as opposed to "just exercise" and has acted as a
clinical instructor for manual therapy courses in the United
States.
Her love for the outdoors prompted the move from New York City to Honolulu. She enjoys marathon running, triathlons, yoga, surfing and flamenco dancing.
