I began this personal page with the idea that my web site (which then contained only a brief introductory home page plus those "Ethnolinguistic Notes" that I had so far gotten on line) was too cold and forbidding. Other people talked about their hobbies and other interests, and included pictures of themselves, and so on. Therefore, I felt a need to do something to make myself appear more human, but was uncertain what to do. For example, it seemed that for an active faculty member the appropriate objective would be introducing him/herself to prospective students--providing information that would help prospective students to form a fair impression of his/her interests, attitudes, and personality as a whole. But since I was now retired and not a concern of prospective students, that motive was no longer present.
But if this site was to be (mainly) about the Ethnolinguistic Notes, it did seem desirable to give the author of those Notes some kind of personality. To give some sense of where the Notes, and the author, "are coming from" (in the apt contemporary expression). I've more or less been fumbling around with the problem of just what to put here ever since.
The first thing I thought of was the story of my wedding. My account of that wedding was the only writing of mine that anyone had requested within the preceding several months. So I put it on line linked to this page.
Later I began something else again. Several years earlier my sister-in-law had suggested that my brothers and I should write up some of the experiences of our lives to pass on to any of our children who might (as she perhaps unrealistically imagined) be interested. Anyway, at that time I made an effort to write brief accounts of a few experiences that had stuck in my mind. I quit after completing a very few. Anyway, I called them "vignettes"; although I'm not very sure what that means, I've never been able to think of a better name. At one point I decided to post a couple here.
Finally, following a suggestion from a friend, I've added a vita.
