Title Sequence: PHAZE ZERO, in stylized letters, fades out with electronic
noises and static.
Black screen with scrolling white text accompanied by processed woman's
voice spoken narration and quiet synthetic ambiance.
NARRATOR: The year is 2015. Three major corporations have taken over as
the authoritative forces in the world: The Schach corporation of Germany,
Magnacom of Japan and Macrocorp of North America. Macrocorp has gained a
strangle hold on the market. This position gives them the financial power
to conduct business unchecked. Amidst all of this display of power in the
real world, Macrocorp also controls the Metaspace, the virtual universe
within the Internet. This is where the war against Macrocorp will be
waged...
INTERIOR: PRISON
Opening scene is the close-up of the face of a man. He is unkept and
pale. As the camera zooms out we see that he has several wires extending
out from beneath the skin on his face. He lies still, but twitches
occasionally. His eyes move rapidly even though they are closed. As the
camera zooms out even further we see he is not alone there are hundreds of
others like him in a dark warehouse type facility. Each man is connected
to a monitor that displays his brain wave activity. We are able to make
out a bar code, and the words: INMATE OF THE US PRISON SYSTEM PROPERTY OF
MACROCORP on the jumpsuit worn by the inmates.
INTERIOR: SCHACH HEADQUARTERS -- AN EXECUTIVE OFFICE
A small office room. A Schach executive is seated at a desk; in front of
him is a computer terminal. The Executive types on his computer.
SCREEN: INITIATE TERMINAL CONNECTION TO THE UNITED CORPORATE
FEDERATION.
CONNECTION SECURE: VERIFYING. CONNECTION SECURED
ENCRYPTION LEVEL GREEN ENABLED
On the computer screen the face of a young man appears.
SCHACH EXECUTIVE: Is the channel secured?
UCF MAN: Yes.

EXECUTIVE: The situation is worsening. The International Trade Commission
has reversed their ruling and will permit the Macrocorp takeover of
Magnacom. They're going to have a damned monopoly.
UCF MAN: So what's the status of the non-surgical interface?
EXECUTIVE: Fischer's been testing a working prototype, but since the
original programmers are in prison, he has had to completely re-write the
software.
UCF MAN: Any more good news?
EXECUTIVE: I'm concerned that Macrocorp may be close to locating Fischer.
He's the only one left that really understands our interface and I'm
afraid he's liable to end up like the others.
UCF MAN: Whether he's guilty or not.
EXECUTIVE: If they get him or the Interface, we'll have nothing left to
compete with. If the UCF can help, now would be a good time.
UCF MAN: You know that there is little the United Corporate Federation
can do without concrete evidence implicating Macrocorp.
EXECUTIVE: Concrete evidence? They're taking over the world! What else
do you need?
UCF MAN: As a representative of the UCF, I cannot condone hacking;
however, our policy requires that we review all information that is
submitted anonymously.
UCF MAN gives a "Know what I mean" look
EXECUTIVE: I see.
INTERIOR: ALEX'S APARTMENT
Small apartment is filled with computer equipment. A man sits in the
middle of the equipment. He leans over a small area of desk space where
he solders on a strange hat shaped device. On one of the many monitors
that surround Fischer is an internet news broadcast. Pan from Fischer to
newscast.

NEWS: Earlier today, the International Trade Commission reversed the
decision to disallow the Macrocorp buyout of former market rival,
Magnacom. This merger is said to unify the computer software industry,
placing Macrocorp as the provider of all software, operating system, and
hardware needs. A spokesperson for Macrocorp stated that the takeover was
important for quality control, compatibility, and the unified development
of computer technology.
He declined to comment when asked if this would constitute a
monopoly of the information technology industry.

In related news, Garth Hill, the President of Macrocorp, announced
that the negotiations for the purchase of Cuba have been finalized. Plans
for Cuba's development as a private resort are said to be already
underway. This brings the total number of countries privately owned by
Macrocorp to sixteen. In light of these announcements, Macrocorp stock
rose.... (Fischer turns down the audio and returns to work on the
computer)

ALEX: Bastards!
Alex gives narration over shots of him working on the computers, soldering
the interface, and adjusting equipment.
ALEX: I actually used to work for Macrocorp until they screwed me out of
the royalties from some killer psycho-diagnostic software I developed for
them. So, I went over to Schach to work on a non-surgical interface that
would allow thought controlled computing. Macrocorp can't figure out a
way to implant their interface into primate test subjects without causing
severe memory loss, a side effect they neglected to mention in their press
release. They'll do anything to raise their stock values.
They'll also do anything to keep anyone from developing a better
interface. Mysteriously, four of Schach's key developers were arrested
for Cybercrimes, and that's where I came in. I picked up the pieces and
got the interface working fairly well.
Now I'm alpha-testing some applications for the interface that
will really bone Macrocorp when we go public. Unfortunately, Macrocorp
knows that I'm working for Schach and they've started hassling me again.
The computer sounds an alarm notifying Fischer that he has an incoming
transmission. Fischer reaches over to receive the transmission and hits
some keys. The Schach Executive appears on one of the monitors.
ALEX: Yeah? Hey, Jim.

EXECUTIVE: How close are you with the metaspace navigation routines?
ALEX: Almost there, just a minor problem with the neural receptor
translation.
EXECUTIVE: And the brain backup software?
ALEX: You mean the neural pattern imager? It's complete, but I haven't
figured out a way to test it yet. Why?
EXECUTIVE: Macrocorp just made a hostile take over of Magnacom. That
software will make us competitive in consumer and medical markets.
Alex responds Cynically
ALEX: Yeah, I heard about the takeover; we all knew it was going to
happen one way or the other.

EXECUTIVE: They're one step away from a complete monopoly, and we're all
that stands in the way. We need that software.
ALEX: I'm working as fast as I can. Macrocorps been on my ass, remember?
EXECUTIVE: In what way?
ALEX: They fucked up my credit and I just found out that I can no longer
perform e-money transactions. It's pretty hard to get things done without
any cash.
EXECUTIVE: That will not be a problem any longer. The CEO has asked me to
give you whatever you need.
ALEX: Such as?
EXECUTIVE: I'm transmitting account information to you now and I think
you'll find the balance most agreeable.
ALEX: That's a start.
EXECUTIVE: We will also provide you full access to our Sat-Net and a
private account through our systems. If you really get in a jam, your
access will permit temporary suspension of all computing activities on our
system; you'll have more computing power at your disposal than most
countries.
ALEX: That's more like it!
EXECUTIVE: We can't really direct you as to how you should proceed, but
I'm sure that you realize what we really need is some information that
will implicate Macrocorp.
ALEX: Sure. That will give me an excuse to put the interface to the test
in metaspace.
EXECUTIVE: Be discrete.
ALEX: With the full bandwidth of the Schach network, I can bounce my
signals all over the planet. A trace will be highly unlikely.
EXECUTIVE: Excellent. If you locate anything interesting, please
transmit it to 030573@ucf.com, encryption Blue.
ALEX: Hasta.
EXECUTIVE: Just be careful.
Alex hits a key and terminates the transmission.
INTERIOR: MACROCORP BUILDING -- A HALLWAY
Vince Kurumaru, walks down a long hallway.

Two men in black suits, gloves and dark glasses walk in the opposite direction. Despite his attempt to move far to one side, the programmer and one of the men in Black bumpshoulders harshly.

Vince turns to stare at the man he has just bumped
into.

VINCE KURAMARU: Hey, watch where you're going!

Men In Black continue walking. The three men continue on their separate
paths. Vince enters his office and sits behind a terminal.

He reaches into a drawer that contains a small box with switches. Vince flips a
switch and waits.
SCREEN: LINE SECURE
Vince types on the computer and waits....
INTERIOR: ALEX'S APARTMENT
Back at Fischers apartment, Fischer is still hunched over the desk working
intently on the interface. In the background an advertisement for
Macrocorp is playing over the internet.
SCREEN: Macrocorp, because bigger is better. You know our Internet,
Software, Hardware, Banking, Global Communication, and Exclusive Resorts.
Now we introduce the New Improved US Prison System. Macrocorp is helping
to keep America safe by providing the abundant prison space necessary to
keep dangerous criminals off the streets. Macrocorp, helping to keep the
Future just a little bit farther away. (cheesy music fade)

Alex sneezes his line.
ALEX: Ahhh bullshit!
The computer signals a transmission.
ALEX: Yeah?

VINCE: Alex - your wire safe?
Alex checks another screen.
.
ALEX: Of course.
VINCE: I'm sure you heard about the merger.
ALEX: You mean hostile takeover? Yeah, I've been watching the news. Hey,
you got the file I asked for?
VINCE: Yeah, but it took me almost an hour in the trash to find this
stuff.
Vince holds up a large handful of disks and papers.
VINCE: I've decrypted as much as I could and entered it into a file.
Vince looks to his keyboard and types
VINCE: I'm transmitting now. Listen, you'd better lay low. I overheard
some of the suits mentioning your name. I think they'd like to have a
word with you.
ALEX: Well, they've got to figure out where I am first.
VINCE: Yeah, but don't push your luck. Did the file go through?
ALEX: Yup, CODES dot T X T? Whatever happened to discretion?
VINCE: Sorry. The file includes some potentially useful access codes and
surgical interface docs.
ALEX: Domo Arigato
VINCE: Be careful with those codes. They've upgraded the security system
so I'm not sure how much good they'll do.
ALEX: Who upgraded the system?
VINCE: Rob Dillinger.
ALEX: Dillinger? That shit head?
VINCE: Do you know him?
ALEX: Yeah, he's one of the surgical interface guys. What the hell does
he have to do with security?
VINCE: I have no idea. I'm just a mushroom.
ALEX: What?
VINCE: Kept in the dark, fed horseshit all day.
ALEX: I see. Do you know what Brad's up to? He used to be in security.
VINCE: He got busted for hacking and he's in the joint.
ALEX: I was hoping he might know something about the new system.
VINCE: All I can tell you is I've seen a file on the system with the
prefix Genesis; it appeared at exactly the same time the upgrade was put
on-line.
ALEX: Was there a press release about the new security technology? I
can't imagine your boys would pass up an opportunity to inflate stock
prices.
Vince says sarcastically...
VINCE: Only that it's supposed to be "revolutionary" just like everything
else we peddle. They did mention that the upgraded system is supposed to
adapt and learn, but then again, so does my Chess game.
ALEX: Macrocorp's security is hooked up to some kind of artificial
intelligence program?
VINCE: If it's artificial intelligence, it's not very sophisticated. The
file is way too small; about a gigabyte. Hold on a second.
Vince types some stuff, looks at some things
VINCE: That's interesting...
ALEX: What?
VINCE: I sorted the file listing and there are a whole shit load of
Genesis files with exactly the same file size. All of them were placed on
the system after the upgrade date. Apparently each one controls some sort
of massive storage device.
ALEX: They're probably just gateway routines. What are on the storage
devices?
Vince stops concentrating on materials and comes to a realization, looks
paranoid.
VINCE: Shit, I really shouldn't be talking about this.
ALEX: What's the problem?
VINCE: I think the suits suspect a leak. I really don't want to be a bad
man's boyfriend in jail.
ALEX: Okay, thanks. Be careful.
VINCE: Listen, you be careful, you're Macrocorp's favorite renegade
employee and I'm sure they want your forwarding address.
Vince looks up and hurriedly says...
VINCE: Somebody's coming, Later.
Vince keys a key and his image disappears from the screen.
Alex directs his line to the mannequin, Mira.
ALEX: Looks like this is going to be a long night Mira.
Alex begins looking at the file that was sent by Vince, paging through
text and gibberish on the screen. Camera pans to an open Mountain Dew can
on the desk. Fade to multiple open/empty Mountain Dew cans on the desk.
Pan back to Fischer. Fischer puts down some pages that he is studying.
Alex says to himself.
ALEX: Here goes nothing.

Fischer reaches for a headset that he carefully places on his head. Wires
run from the headset to somewhere behind his computer. He begins typing.
The Macrocorp logo appears on the screen.
SCREEN: INITIATING TERMINAL CONNECTION

Alex appears annoyed.
Alex directs his lines to Mira.
ALEX: What the hell is Gabriel? A file name?
Fischer types and manipulates equipment. He appears to be frustrated.
ALEX: This is impossible, no artificial intelligence program should be
able to compete with my interface. I should be in by now!
Alex makes some drastic movements and frantically manipulates the
controls.
SCREEN: GABRIEL039412

ALEX: Finally, Gabriel's down. Alright, who's next?
Alex acts like a cliche character.
ALEX: You want some of this? Who wants some?
Fischer directs his line to Mira.
ALEX: You know, Brad would've gotten a kick out of this program. Shit, I
bet this is one of his. Dillinger probably annexed it for the security
system and took the credit.
Alex says angrily...
ALEX: It's a shame I have to destroy it.
Alex furrows his brow, squinting his eyes.

The overlayed image of a face flashes for an instant.
Alex yells, then tears the headset off and looks dazed.
ALEX: What the hell was that, feedback?

Alex rubs his eyes, then shakes his finger at the headset.
ALEX: No more feedback. Feedback bad.
Alex puts the headset back on and continues hacking.
ALEX: I hope the codes Vince sent me are worth a shit. Let's try a low

Alex types.

Alex types some more, the picture changes to an office.

Alex puts down a plate of food and a Mountain Dew on the desk, and takes a

Alex types some more, a picture appears showing a lounge.
Typing, a picture appears showing the inside of a warehouse.
It is vast, dark, and dingy with men lying on cots filling the floor of
the warehouse. These men have wires and tubes extending from beneath the
skin of their heads.
Alex looks alarmed.
Alex types some more and the picture changes to a close-up of Brad's face.
ALEX: BRAD! What the fuck!

Fischer rips the interface off his head. He begins to pace across the

Alex to Dillinger, contemptuously.
ALEX: Dillinger...
DILLINGER: Welcome to the United States Prison System. As a convicted
criminal, you are now property of Macrocorp. A direct neural interface
will be surgically implanted, your mind will be blanked, and you will be
jacked into the Net. The remainder of your life will be lived out in
service of Macrocorp, within Metaspace: there is no parole, no escape,

about now...
