Priority on the sign-up list will be given to those who intend to break the traditional slam rules. There will be 4 microphones, a CD player, two turntables, one 1/4" cable to plug in basic instruments, and one free-roaming bass amp (not plugged into soundboard) on stage. If you have more sound requirements, bring your own cords and equipment to make it happen (There will be 5 unused channels on the mixer board). That being said, you have 30 seconds to set up... do not make us wait for you!!
First Thursdays is the largest registered poetry slam in the world (500+ in attendance)!! Please forward to anybody who may be interested...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE re:Verses SLAMS INTO DOWNTOWN
Spoken word luminaries Travis Thompson and Brenda Kwon ignite Hawaii’s poetry scene with “re:Verses,” an evening of featured poets, open mic, and jazz music by DJ Mr. Nick. This all-ages event, beginning November 30 at 8:00 pm, will take place on the last Tuesday of every month at The ARTS at Marks Garage.
Since 2003, Kwon, Thompson, and Nick Yee have fired up a loyal following by rousing poets to seize the microphone at monthly events held at Coffee Talk and Ward’s Rafters. A previous “Hot Pick” in The Honolulu Weekly, these three blend the spark and energy of the slam scene with the relaxed and comforting atmosphere of a best friend’s living room. Kwon, who founded the poetry series, performs her work in several circles of the literary scene. “There’s room for a lot of different poets—slammers, page poets, MCs—to come into the mix,” says Kwon. “We’ve always wanted to
let everyone, no matter what style, feel that they could get up there and share their work.” Kwon was part of an all-local cast of GiRL FeST Hawaii’s benefit performance of “The Vagina Monologues” at the Hawaii Theater in February 2004. Thompson, a member of The 2003 and 2004 Hawai’i Slam Team and a well-known regular at Studio 1’s First Thursdays events, sees re:Verses as a complement
to the slam phenomenon. “We want to promote poetical creativity outside of a competitive atmosphere,” Thompson says. But competition is not completely out of the picture--re:Verses also plans to hold two team-slam contests to be held in March and October 2005.
Kicking off the premiere event of re:Verses will be featured poets Joy Harjo, the Hawai’i Slam Team, Juliet Kono, Jesse Lipman, Gary Pak, Kathryn Takara, and Richard Hamasaki. An open mic session will follow on a first-come, first-served basis, with smooth jazz rhythms filling out the evening.
