People expect college graduates to be able to communicate competently using writing. Your goal is to successfully complete ENG 100 so you will be better prepared for academic writing for college. ENG 100 meets the UH Written Communications Hallmarks. Course assignments and activities will:
  1. introduce students to different forms of college-level writing, including, but not limited to, academic discourse, and guide them in writing for different purposes and audiences
  2. provide students with guided practice of writing processes–planning, drafting, critiquing, revising, and editing–making effective use of written and oral feedback from the faculty instructor and from peers
  3. require at least 5000 words of finished prose–equivalent to approximately 20 typewritten pages
  4. help students develop information literacy by teaching search strategies, critical evaluation of information and sources, and effective selection of information for specific purposes and audiences;  teach appropriate ways to incorporate such information, acknowledge sources and provide citations
  5. help students read texts and make use of a variety of sources in expressing their own ideas, perspectives, and/or opinions in writing

What you should be able to do at the end of the course:

ENG 100 students will develop strategies for effective college writing, with an emphasis on critical reading and thinking. This course includes instruction in the composing process and practice in various kinds of writing, including analysis, interpretation, and research writing from sources. By the end of the course, students will complete a minimum of 5000 words of finished prose, roughly equivalent to 20 typewritten pages.
Upon successful completion of ENG 100, the student should be able to meet each of the following learning outcomes:

Learning Outcome #1 Employ a writing process which includes gathering information and exploring ideas, developing and supporting a point of view or thesis, organizing, revising, editing, and proofreading.

What you will do in the course to achieve Learning Outcome # 1 Each paper you write will require that you engage in a writing process which is appropriate for the assignment.

We will go over the elements of good writing style and the basic rules of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics to help you edit and proofread your papers competently.

You will do online grammar, punctuation, and mechanics exercises to practice identifying and correcting grammatical errors. You will take a diagnostic test at the beginning of the session to assess your strengths and weaknesses. You will take a test at the end of the semester to see if you've improved your knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.

Learning outcome #2 Produce different forms of college-level writing, such as narrative, analytical, and persuasive essays, whose content, organization, diction, and style are effectively adapted to various writing situations, purposes, audiences, and subjects.

What you will do to achieve Learning Outcome #2 You will write 6 formal papers, one of which will be a research essay. Your page count will vary depending on the font you use, but if you use 12 point Times Roman font with 1 inch margins, you will probably have approximately 300 words on a page.

  • Narrative essay (750-1000 words )
  • Mini-research informative essay about a place (750-1000 words)
  • Description and analysis of a visual argument (750-1000 words)
  • Summary and analysis of a written argument (750-1000 words)
  • Persuasive research essay (1500-2000 words)
  • Literary analysis paper (600-800 words)

Learning Outcome #3 Analyze and evaluate the logic, evidence, and strategies of an argument (written and/or presented in a visual or digital medium).

What you will do to achieve Learning Outcome #3 You will become familiar with common logical fallacies and the strategies of arguments, both visual and written. You will write an analysis of a visual argument. You will also use the strategies of argument in your persuasive research essay.

Learning Outcome #4 Analyze and interpret a literary work (nonfiction, fiction, poetry, or drama) or other textual material.

What you will do to achieve Learning Outcome #4 We will analyze some short stories in class. one of your required papers will be a literary analysis paper.

Learning Outcome #5Find and evaluate information from a library, from the Internet, or from other sources; synthesize relevant findings in his/her own writing without plagiarizing.

What you will do to achieve Learning Outcome #5 You will learn to evaluate sources and look for credible, reliable sources primarily from library databases to use in your essays about a place and your persuasive research essay. You will be required to do activities and quizzes to identify plagiarism. You will practice writing paraphrases and summaries without plagiarizing.

Learning Outcome #6 Work effectively with fellow students and the instructor in providing and receiving written and verbal feedback on assigned work.

What you will do to achieve Learning Outcome #6For each formal paper assignment, you will be expected to share your drafts with a small peer feedback group. About 10% of your grade will be based on your writing process, which includes how well you work with your peer feedback groups.

Learning Outcome #7Write a coherent in-class response to an assigned question or topic.

What you will do to achieve Learning Outcome #7You will write about 4 in-class responses to assigned questions or topics. Your goal is to improve the clarity of your writing. If your in-class writing has grammatical errors, you will be expected to correct your errors for additional homework.

You will have an in-class essay final on the last day of class.
