Class work: Pronoun Reference problems. Working Bibliographies due printed out at the beginning of class. You earn 10 points for having your Works Cited or References page printed out at the beginning of class. You earn 10 points for group work on the working bibiographies.

Homework: Work on your rough draft, which is due Thursday, Oct. 20.

Grammar homework: Read BH "Ch. 23: Make Pronoun References Clear." Do Bedford Handbook Electronic Grammar Exercises.

Continue listening to NPR on Hawaii Public Radio (website or real radio).

Oct. 20

ROUGH DRAFT OF PAPER #3 DUE. YOU SHOULD HAVE 4 COPIES PRINTED OUT BY THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.

Homework: Finish your final draft. Checklist for your final draft:

  1. Highlight or underline the xeroxes of your sources to show me the passages or phrases you cited in your paper. Make sure that your sources are clearly labeled with the titles of the sources and authors.
  2. Print out one copy of your final draft to turn in. Before class on Tuesday, October 25, upload a copy of your final draft to the Comment website.
  3. Attach your sources to the printed version of your final draft.
  4. Attach your Elbow Group critique sheets to the printed version of your final draft.

Other homework: Continue listening to KIPO 89.3 FM on Hawaii Public Radio to get ideas for possible interesting research topics. You can listen to live streaming on your computer if your radio can't catch the signal if you go the Hawaii Public Radio webstreaming site at http://www.hawaiipublicradio.org/livestream.htm

You can also access the shows any time from the websites of the different programs. Try listening to Weekend Edition Saturday or Sunday, and/or This American Life. Monday's 6:30-7:00 p.m. show is Making Contact. Tuesday's 6:30-7:00 p.m. show is Left, Right & Center.

Share The New York Times article you found. Go over evaluating arguments. Quiz using Evaluating Arguments handout. Start on reading homework in 40 Model Essays: "Death and Justice" by Edward I. Koch (319-324) and "The Death Penalty" by David Bruck (327-331).

Homework: Read"Death and Justice" by Edward I. Koch (319-324) and "The Death Penalty" by David Bruck (327-331) in 40 Model Essays. Underline the main idea of each paragraph in each essay. In The Bedford Handbook, do Exercise 48-1 (517-518). The answers to items a-e are at the back of your book. You will be comparing your answers to a group and getting either a group grade or an individual grade, depending on whether the groups agree on their answers. Those who do not do the homework and do not have answers at the beginning of class to compare with their classmates will not get the points for having done the homework.

Other homework: Continue listening to KIPO 89.3 FM on Hawaii Public Radio. Pick up a copy of The New York Times. Choose one article that interests you to share with the class. Keep a file of the articles you choose. You will have to choose one of those articles for a future assignment. If you cut the article out, make sure that you write on it the important information you will need for a Work Cited entry: date and section and page numbers (don't forget to record the page number of the second part of the article if it appears on another page.) If you did not turn in your corrected narrative essay, print it out and turn it in on Thursday. Do not upload the corrected essay; just turn in hard copy.

Quiz on Logical Fallacies. How to outline. Start Paper #4: Persuasive Essay. Work on developing a thesis statement for Paper #4. Do Bedford Handbook Electronic Research Exercise on thesis statements E-ex 53-1.

Homework: Thesis statement and rough outline due on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Start working on rough draft which is due on Thursday, Nov. 10. Do more research on your topic if necessary.

Refresher homework: Do the Bedford Handbook Electronic Research Exercises for either MLA or APA style. The MLA exercises are listed below. If you want to practice APA style, just choose the APA exercises instead of the MLA exercises.

On Monday, I will check the Bedford Electronic Exercises website to see how you are doing on keeping up with the homework. Part of your final exam for the class will be a grammar test.
