Welcome to my home page.  I hold a dual-culture faculty position in Information & Computer Sciences (ICS) and Library & Information Science (LIS) at the University of Hawaii.  I'm a Professor and Associate Chair of ICS, and Chair of the LIS Program.  From 2011-2015, I was Chair of the Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Communication & Information Sciences (CIS), which encompasses four units and three colleges across the University of Hawaii.  I look forward to serving again as CIS Chair in Spring 2019.

I'm interested in how people integrate diverse types of knowledge, from document collections to the work of people with different kinds of expertise.  I study interdisciplinary scientific collaborations with the NASA Astrobiology Institute, and social Q&A communities--for details, see my Research page.  I'm also helping develop Learnamic, a site where homeschooling parents and children can discover and share learning resources.  If you're interested in any of these projects or programs, feel free to contact me.
