Design of an architectural faculty housing based on  a set of complex programmatic requirements and a severely sloped site.

Parti'.
A linear organization of units with the central axis shifted towards the view of Diamond Head and Waikiki. The resulting "pockets" of space along the property line become private areas exclusively for each unit.

Makai and Mauka: From Formal to Informal.
The journey begins at the front Gazebo and eventually climaxes at the Library where the building perches over a rockwall with a series of waterfalls that trickle down and over massive boulders. Along the way up, one experiences two major spaces: the Makai (Sea) Courtyard and the Mauka (Mountain) Courtyard.

A formal organization of design elements--qualities of a planned urban space--takes shape at the Makai Courtyard. The stairs that separates the two courtyards is analogous to a hiking trail in which a person climbs up to a higher plateau and there discovers two major vantage views: the Rockwall/ Waterfall towards the mauka direction and Diamond Head and Waikiki towards the makai direction.

At the Mauka Courtyard, the Rockwall/ Waterfall formation and the "Floating Stairs" leading up to the Library becomes an event-- a celebration of space; a backdrop for special events such as student presentations and design juries.

Interior.
The spaces within each unit are held together horizontally and vertically by an indoor garden that also becomes the unit's interior focal point.
