Prof. Gangnes teaches and conducts research in open-economy macroeconomics, with a particular emphasis on the economic relationship between the US and Asian economies. He also conducts research on the Hawai'i economy.
His current research includes econometric evaluation of U.S.-Japan trade policies, the evolution of production and trade networks for information technology products, and empirical modeling of current account balances.
Prof. Gangnes is Director of the Hawaii Economy Project for the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO). With Prof. Carl Bonham, Prof. Gangnes maintains the UHERO forecasting model of the state and county economies, and the online UHERO Economic Information System. Prof. Gangnes is also an affiliated researcher with Project LINK, a United Nations global economic modeling program.
