Teaching

Courses

ETEC 414 - Media in Education

Introduction to theories, application of principles, acquisition of practical skill of educational media relevant to teaching/learning situation, in classroom as well as non-school settings. The purpose of the course is to prepare student teachers and other educators to use a variety of media and advocate for media in the classroom. Theoretical constructs of instructional design, visualizing concepts and visual literacy are used as a basis for developing media. Students learn about technology including video, computer graphics, projected visuals, e-mail, World Wide Web, distance education, and multi-media. The course follows an interactive and hands-on approach. Students produce a number of media projects, and make presentations advocating various technologies. Projects are graded using performance checklists. (3 credits)

ETEC 600 – Theory and Practice in Educational Technology

Major models of instruction underlying technological application to instructional development. The purpose of the course is to prepare students to become instructional designers. The course covers systems theory, change theory, needs assessment, information processing, instructional design, and grant writing basics. In groups, students develop and present a front-end analysis of a chosen instructional system. Using a need identified in the analysis, they develop a grant proposing a technological solution. Students also in groups present a lesson demonstrating various models of instructional design. The final exam asks students to reflect on key concepts covered in the course. The course is rigorous and requires that students commit ample time for reading, writing, and meeting with project teams. This course is part of the core in the Educational Technology Master's Program. It is also appropriate for teachers, administrators, trainers, and other educators seeking to examine and improve their own instructional systems. (3 credits)

ETEC 603 - Instructional Design & Development

Basic concepts and techniques of instructional design and application to solving instructional problems in real-life situations. The purpose of the course is to prepare students to follow a systematic approach for designing instruction. The course includes the application of basic concepts and techniques for solving instructional problems in real-life situations. Students will develop instructional modules and conduct formative evaluation. Peer review will be used to enhance the teamwork aspect of instructional design. This course is part of the core in the Educational Technology Master's Program. It is also appropriate for teachers, administrators, trainers, and other educators wanting to improve their ability to design instruction. (3 credits)

ETEC 620 – Visual Design

The course provides theory and practice involved in planning and producing instructional graphic materials for desktop publishing and computer-based presentations. The purpose of the course is to assist students in implementing a systematic approach to the design production of instructional materials with emphasis on visual literacy, elements of design, and digital photographic techniques. Course content includes: visual design principles and visual literacy; instructional strategies for text-based materials; digital photographic techniques; desktop publishing and layout. Students will compare visual design strategies in various media such as, video, print, computer-based, and web-based applications. The major class project will provide a context for the comparison through designing an instructional web page that has a quick-time movie, and a printable (PDF format) piece of text-based instruction. (3 credits)

ETEC 630 – Video/TV Design

Development and utilization of television for purposes of improving the teaching-learning process. The purpose of the course is to prepare instructional designers and other educators to design, plan, and produce professional quality television and video instruction. Emphasis is on developing instructional strategies appropriate for the medium. Pre-production planning is key to the effectiveness of instruction, so a large block of the course is devoted to these processes. Production skills and advanced editing skills are practiced. In large groups, students choose production roles, design instructional strategies, plan a production, produce and edit an instructional video, conduct formative evaluation, and write a final report. (3 credits)

ETEC 663 – Planning for Technology & Resources

This ÒAction-ResearchÓ course will allow students to use their skills and knowledge of technology operations, concepts, and integration. They will reflect on their own integration of technology for learning as well as assess the conditions in their own system. The course will provide the basis for developing and maintaining positive mentoring relationships to assist others in developing technology intensive learning environments. Students will learn to evaluate needs and set goals for mentoring. They will learn to help others match content and technology standards, and mentor others through the design of effective instruction. Students will practice their mentoring skills by conducting technology tutoring sessions in their schools. (3 credits)

ETEC 687 – Instructional Development Practicum

Practicum in instructional development and design in academic, agency, and private industry settings. Second and third year students choose a real-life instructional design/technology project as a group. Students individually identify what they would like to learn in the course and the group tries to incorporate these areas into the chosen project. Then, students identify roles of group members, set goals and objectives, conduct, and evaluate the project. A final report is required to document the project. Past projects have included conducting technology workshops for College of Education faculty and assisting the teacher education program in improving technology skills for student teachers. The course is restricted to students in the ETEC Master's program. (3 credits)

ETEC 688 - Educational Technology Practicum

Practicum in educational technology applications in academic or non-academic settings, under close supervision, plus regular class meetings. The purpose of the course is for ETEC Master's students to operationalize the theories and methods learned in the ETEC Masters Program. Students in their final semester complete their Masters Projects through a series of researcher, writer, and presenter workshops. They share their research proposals, critique each otherÕs final drafts, and prepare their final MasterÕs presentations and electronic portfolios. In each workshop series, students are required to provide meaningful homework for other students to assist them in the research efforts. The final event is to present their research to a College of Education audience. The course is restricted to students in the ETEC Master's program. (3 credits)

ETEC 698 - Distance Education Strategies

This course was delivered once as an experimental course. The purpose of the course was to prepare teachers to design, deliver, and evaluate instruction for distance education. Students develop distance learning lessons with management and evaluation plans, and made on camera presentations. A two-way interactive television system was used for the delivery of the course. Students were in two classrooms connected by video. They rotated being the studio site and the receive site so that they could understand the feeling of being a distance education student and teacher. Students used various technologies to deliver instruction, such as, the overhead presenter and presentation software. Interaction strategies were emphasized. Electronic mail was used to enhance communication. (3 credits)

ETEC 699 - Directed Reading and/or Research

This course is an elective in the ETEC Master's program. The purpose of the course is to allow individual students and faculty members to pursue projects of mutual interest. It serves as additional practical experience for the student. Past student projects have included: writing grants, acting as research assistants, writing research articles, and acting as teaching assistants for the courses listed above. (3 credits)
