Teaching

Courses

The department was previously called Educational Technology (ETEC) and as of Fall 2015 is known as Learning Design and Technology (LTEC). I have taught all of these courses listed. Those listed as LTEC/ETEC are the ones that I taught before and after name change. Those with only ETEC are those taught only before the name change and those with LTEC are those that I have taught since the new designation.

ETEC 414 - Media in Education

This course provides an introduction to theories, application of principles, acquisition of practical skill of educational media relevant to teaching/learning situation, in classroom as well as non-school settings. The purpose of the course is to prepare student teachers and other educators to use a variety of media and advocate for media in the classroom. Theoretical constructs of instructional design, visualizing concepts and visual literacy are used as a basis for developing media. Students learn about technology including video, computer graphics, projected visuals, e-mail, World Wide Web, distance education, and multi-media. The course follows an interactive and hands-on approach. Students produce a number of media projects, and make presentations advocating various technologies. Projects are graded using performance checklists. (3 credits)

LTEC/ETEC 600 – Theory and Practice in Educational Technology

This is a foundational course in preparing students to become instructional design professionals. The course covers foundational processes for analyzing systems and their learners. These processes help determine which problems can be can be solved through instruction means and how to go about solving those problems. Students in teams use case studies to develop documents and present a front-end analysis of an instructional system. Using a need identified in the analysis, they develop a technological solution. In addition, students in new teams will use the instructional design theories, models, and strategies they have learned to create a technology-based lesson. Project teams are used to simulate real world settings that require students to practice professional dispositions and create synergistic dynamics required in solving instructional problems. The course is rigorous and requires that students commit ample time for reading, writing, and meeting with project teams. This course is a core course in the Learning Design and Technology Master's Program. The course uses a flipped classroom approach. (3 credits)

LTEC/ETEC 603/613 - Instructional Design & Development

The purpose of the course is to prepare students to follow a systematic approach for designing instruction. The course includes the application of basic concepts and techniques for solving instructional problems in real-life situations. Students will analyze an instructional problem, develop a prototype, then design an instructional module, and conduct formative evaluation. Peer review will be used to enhance the teamwork aspect of instructional design. Students will reflect on their own participation in the project, and various theories and methods in a final exam. This course is part of the core in the Educational Technology Master's Program and Doctoral Specialization. The course uses a flipped classroom approach. (3 credits)

LTEC/ETEC 620 – Visual Design

The purpose of the course is to assist students in implementing a systematic approach to the design and production of instructional materials with emphasis on visual literacy, elements of design, and digital photographic techniques. Course content includes: visual design principles and visual literacy; digital photography; newsletter and eBook design. Students will compare visual design strategies in various media such as, video, print, computer-based, and web-based applications and reflect on theories and methods in a midterm exam. Students will individually create or redesign a newsletter. In teams, students will explore relevant free software and present their discoveries to the class in a workshop. Their team will then design an eBook that has interactive, photographic, multimedia, and evaluative components, present to the class, conduct formative evaluation with their classmates, review their findings, and make revisions to their work. Much of the course is conducted in a studio like setting where the instructor provides feedback and guidance, and students are encouraged to give feedback to others. The course uses a flipped classroom approach. (3 credits)

LTEC 623 – Digital Video Design/ETEC 630 – Video/TV Design

The purpose of the course is to prepare instructional designers and other educators to design, plan, and produce professional quality television and video instruction. Emphasis is on developing instructional strategies appropriate for the medium. Pre-production planning is key to the effectiveness of instruction, so a large block of the course is devoted to these processes. Production skills and advanced editing skills are practiced. In large groups, students choose production roles, design instructional strategies, plan a production, produce and edit an instructional video, conduct formative evaluation, and write a final report. (3 credits)

ETEC 663 – Planning for Technology & Resources

This “Action-Research” course allows students to use their skills and knowledge of technology operations, concepts, and integration. They reflect on their own integration of technology for learning as well as assess the conditions in their own system. The course provides the basis for developing and maintaining positive mentoring relationships to assist others in developing technology intensive learning environments. Students learn to evaluate needs and set goals for mentoring. They learn to help others match content and technology standards, and mentor others through the design of effective instruction. Students practice their mentoring skills by conducting technology tutoring sessions in their schools. (3 credits)

LTEC/ETEC 687 – Instructional Development Practicum

Advanced students choose a real-life instructional design/technology project as a group. Students individually identify what they would like to learn in the course and the group tries to incorporate these areas into the chosen project. Then, students identify roles of group members, set goals and objectives, conduct, and evaluate the project. A final report is required to document the project. Past projects have included conducting technology workshops for College of Education faculty and assisting the teacher education program in improving technology skills for student teachers. The course is restricted to students in the ETEC Master's program. (3 credits)

LTEC/ETEC 687 – Instructional Design and Technology Practicum

This course meant for exiting LTEC master’s students. This course provides students with an opportunity to put instructional design and educational technology theories and skills learned in the program into practice by completing a capstone project for the Master’s degree. Over the course of two semesters students design, deliver and evaluate an implementation project of their choice (action research, instructional design, or usability). This project will begin in LTEC 687 (fall semester) and be completed in LTEC 690 (spring semester). The goal of the course is to provide students with real world experience with educational technologies in a collaborative environment in which they receive feedback from peers and the instructor. Student project development is guided by milestones and templates. (3 credits)

ETEC 688 - Educational Technology Practicum

The purpose of the course is for ETEC Master's students to operationalize the theories and methods learned in the ETEC Master’s Program. Students in their final semester complete their Master’s Projects through a series of researcher, writer, and presenter workshops. They share their research proposals, critique each other’s final drafts, and prepare their final Master’s presentations and electronic portfolios. In each workshop series, students are required to provide meaningful homework for other students to assist them in the research efforts. The final event is to present their research to a College of Education audience. The course is restricted to students in the ETEC Master's program. (3 credits)

LTEC 689 - LTEC Training and Evaluation Practicum
